Has anyone completed the PN component at Deaconess?

Nursing Students Online Learning

I contacted Deaconess yesterday to get more information on their program. I was informed that I could not just do the practical nursing component that I had to sign an agreement for the the two year program. I feel the LPN would be better for me now as a distance program while I am waiting for acceptance into the the local RN program next fall. Has anyone only completed the LPN portion? What are the consequesnces if you don't complete the RN? I am taking all my prerequisites at the local community college to get them out of the way. The deadline for admission in January is sometime in September.

Can someone also explain what is done when you go on campus the first time. What all is covered? What are they expecting out of you?

How do you like the chats? Are there many people in your class? I am in NUR 171 and we have a large class so it makes the chats a little difficult to follow.

Mona,

So far I love the chats, they are pretty funny...so much more of a relaxed environment for asking questions...IMHO

This semester I am in a group of 14 students and we are all in the same NR160/163 classes so we have all gotten to know each other. A few of these 14 are in my COM103 as well.

The only time I have gotten confused is with the three Jennifers we have and a classmate of mine that has the exact same first and last name as me with the exception of one letter...LOL

Cheri Barnett (me) Cheri Barlett (classmate)...we both got a kick out of that one, since our name is not common, especially the spelling of the first. :chuckle

I am glad to hear you like it also. I am very excited about starting and have so many questions. I contacted the Ohio BON but I am going to call them and ask a few more questions. I called the Missouri BON, they called back but I was gone so I need to call them back now. I would love to be able to get my LPN and then go back for the ASN part in a few months or so.

Cbarnett2...what are you talking about that you will have an instructor? Also, how much time to you have to spend online a week with your classes? How about studying? I really want to do this I just wantt o make sure I don't cheat myself so I can give 100% to it.

Trish,

Don't worry about taking off a couple of months between the LPN and the last year of the ASN...when you sign a form that you are planning to sit the PN-NCLEX after your first year with Deaconess, you have to "agree to take off a whole semester", because Deaconess wants you to be able to focus on this important part of transitioning through the program. Then you resume your next set of courses for your ASN (RN).

The instructor I was referring to for my skills is my preceptor at the hospital that will oversee my clinical experiences. Although this first Nursing course is not "technically" a clinical semester you have to learn basic skills and my hospital was kind enough to offer me training on my basic skills.

As far as studying...I do plenty...For the 7 credit hours I am carrying with Deaconess this semester, consisting of 2 Nursing and 1 Communications class, I (ideally) dedicate 20-25 hrs of study time per week, 2 hours of which are "scheduled" chat sessions (which is like "online" classtime - 1 hr for each Nursing class).

Hope this is helpful!

Cheri

Yes, that was very helpful!!!! Thanks!!!! I talked to my clinical manager on the floor that I work on and she gave me the name of who to talk to about doing my clinicals there and she doesn't see a problem with me doing them there.

As far as the science classes what is your time line for having to have them done, does it have to be before you take your PN boards? I was hoping to take 1 a semester so I don't stress myself and my family out.

Trish,

That is awesome that you have an established relationship with a hospital that is willing to help you out...that can be the greatest challenge for people who want to go to Deaconess.

As far as Science classes, I took Microbiology this past summer and I am taking A & P I this semester which adds another 4 hours of classtime on Saturday at my local CC and 6-8 hours of studying...then I plan to do A & P II this coming Spring...so it can be done one at a time.

I understand what you mean about stressing out your family...You have to be very organized and make a good schedule that always includes "you time" and " family time". I workout for "me" for 1 hr every weekday morning and spend 1 hr each evening with my family before I start studying. I also take off Saturday evening to watch a movie or get out of the house.

Just remember you can do anything for a little while... :lol2:

That is what I plan on doing too. I just didn't know if they all had to be done by the time you took your PN-NCLEX or not. I wish the hospital would call me back, I am so impatient about waiting.

Trish,

The only science needed to sit the PN-NCLEX for Deaconess is A & P I & II. Micro and Chemistry are listed as part of the RN Component.

I totally understand feeling impatient...I have been the same way for the last year. I just want to get moving along.

Keep in Touch...

Cheri

That is what I thought about Chemistry and Micro, YEAH!!! Thank you so very much for answering my questions, I appreciate it so very much!!!!!

Hello All:

I am just learning about Deaconess tonight. I am going to call them tomorrow. I have looked at their website briefly. Reading all your posts has answered my initial questions. But a few questions I have are, Do you take classes according to a pre-arranged semester schedule with no deviations? If so, that would mean that you couldn't just start at any time, but would have to wait for the semester commencement??? (For instance, I believe at Excelsior, you study on your own, then take tests at your own convenience)

Also, how often are the clinicals? And, what are the costs like? Is there anyone on the board that has graduated from Deaconess and currently working as LPN or RN? Thanks,

Correct. You follow the school's semester breakdown with the exception of already credited courses ie;A & P. Deaconess is not a self-paced, self-directed program.

Clinicals are completed during the second through sixth semesters. Each clinical semester varies in length but the school could provide you with the number of hours required for each semester as it has changed since I was in clinical. I am waiting for the state to complete my TPP and then I have a job waiting for me. I know there are other graduates who also have secured working positions after graduation hopefully they will chime in too.

Good luck,

Opal

Can anyone clarify? I've heard that you can do your coursework at Excelsior and then, instead of taking the CPNE, you can take that course at Deaconness for 3-4 months? Has anyone done this or have other information?????
