What is the difference between DCN and Excelsior College? I have called DCN a few times for info and nobody gets back to me. I have yet to receive info in the mail. Thanks for the help. :)

EC will not accept you unless you are a medic or an lpn for the rn program, dcn will let you get your adn online without already being an lpn. they have an option where if you wish you can take your nclex-pn boards after the first year, then you can choose to continue on for a second year to become an rn. you do have to secure a clinical site in your area. dcn's clinicial liasion cannot speak on your behalf to prospective site unless you are an accepted student. They are NLN accreditated. Contact your board of nursing to make sure that there is not a problem being an online student and wanting to do clinicals. The only BONS I have heard of so far that will not let you do it is NY,LA,WA,CA. I do know that MI,FL,TN,PA,MO, are ok. Also, many transfer credits seem to be ok. However, if you have not had a/p you need to take them both at same college. (local college is cheaper)Also other science classes need a lab microbiology, chemistry. any pre reqs that need to be completed, you need to finish them by end of semester in which they arestated. At end of first semester need to fly to mo for skills eval in order to start clinicals, at the end each semester there after you need to fly to mo for approx 3 days for skills eval. Having previous medical experience is a plus! majortity of pre reqs completed is a plus. am trying to secure a clinical site right now as much as possible before I send my application in. I am praying for this to work out and get in in Jan. Everything that I have wrote here, I have learned by searching these boards and asking questions. I have read everything on DCN website and I have spoke with admissions. If I missed anything I apologize. There a Deaconess students on this board. They are great. They will be happy to answer any questions that I might have been helpful with. Good luck and please excuse the punctuation/grammer. colleen :) UOTE=Jenn CLPN]What is the difference between DCN and Excelsior College? I was told by the ASN Advisor that the dead line for DCN January applications is September 1st....

I had asked because my sister was contemplating applying for January. She has since decided to wait for the Summer '06 session.

Hi,

The original deadline was for Sept 1 but they extended it to Oct 1. :)

Just thought I would drop a line and see what everyone else has heard or knows. I had been waiting for a reply from Deaconess school of Nursing about the January Start. Frist I am told I need to get my clinical information gethered and mail or email it to clinical instructor for the online course. Then at the end of Aug I get a call from one of the advisors telling me that Deaconess will not be offer this program to anyone from WA state. They said that WA doesn't approve of their program. And they just got email about it. Before I even started to seriously consider Deaconess I called WA BON, in talking to the BON in WA I was told as long as the clinical portion of the program meet their requirements they didn't see a problem, I sent them as much information as I could and the reply back seem positive to me. I guess there is another online nursing program and it doesn't offer a clinical portion so WA BON doesn't approve that program, they just wanted to make sure I understood that any program I choice must meet their requirements re: clinicals. I am not sure if anyone has heard from Deaconess if they have been accepted for the Jan start for 06 but it is really disappointing that they would wait so long to let me know, so not I feel really stuck and at a loss to what I am going to do! Would like to know if anyone else has heard Deaconess doing this to anyone else or if they know might have information on what is really going on. I have another friend from WA who is also hoping to do Deaconess she hasn't heard anything from them yet, go figure! I am so depressed right now, my options have been cut to almost nothing now.

I have also applied for the Jan 06 semester. I just spoke with someone in the admissions office asking them when applicants would be notified. I was told that all applicant files are turned in for review on Oct 1 and within 2 weeks after that they would be notifying applicants with their admission status (whether or not they are accepted). Have you applied for admission before? this is my first time applying. From what you wrote it sounds like you have. If not, I do know that with regard to setting up a clinical site before acceptance is impossible. They cannot speak to any prospective site unless you are an accepted student. I am sorry for your frustration, believe me I am so tired of waiting to get into a program. This college seems to be a ray of light. If I were you, I would get complete details from WA BON on any requirements or restrictions. Good luck. Colleen :)

Hi Ladies,

Just want to let you know that first of all I have a classmate who lives in Washington State. I know that last semester she did her clinicals in St Louis, but that was because she had just moved to Washington at the beginning of the semester and did not have time to secure a clinical site before the semester started.

I sent her a message this morning to find out what she knows about the Washington BON situation and I will give you an update when I hear back from her.

Cheri :)

Cheri,

That would be great! I contacted Deaconess trying to get the names or at least have one of the Washington State students contact me, but wasn't able to get anyone's name, wondering if Deaconess has a policy about giving out other student's names and email address, in any case I wasn't able to get anyone's name from there. It's jus so depressing that I have waited from April until now to get into this program ( just missed the last start) and now I have to re think my whole plan about becoming a nurse. I can see why Washington state wouldn't accept graduates from other online prgrams because they don't have a clinical portion to their program but Deaconess ! Oh, Well it would be nice to find out what the other students from Washington state know or have found out.

thanks again

Cheri :)

This comes from my classmate who is currently completing her third semester in the DCN program. She lives in WA, as her husband is stationed there by the military.

She was originally living in MO when she enrolled in DCN and her husband was transferred to WA after she started the program. Once she arrived in WA she found that the WA board will not allow students to do clinicals without an onsite instructor. So she has been traveling to St Louis each semester to do her clinicals in addition to the end of the semester evaluation.

It would make sense that DCN would not encourage WA students to enroll in the program unless they knew ahead of time that this much traveling would be required.

I hope this information is not too much of a disappointment for those hoping to apply to the program.

Cheri :)
