CPNE study resources besides a workshop--opinions wanted

Hey all,

What other CPNE resources are being found helpful for study? I am particularly asking about the Excelsior study tools like the Power Start conference (or whatever they call it now) and the other online resources. Has anyone used these things, and what do you think of them? I'm asking because, while they are not particularly expensive in and of themselves, they do add up if one would take all of them.

How about the Excelsior CPNE DVD and flash cards? What is your opinion on those?

Thank you kindly! :nurse:

No one has anything? You mean you all are just winging it? :p

It depends on your level of nursing experience. I had 7 years LPN experience in a teaching hospital when I took the CPNE. I got the video, and practiced my PCS sheets on my real patients. I joined the EC Yahoo study groups as well- which were the biggest help of all. I did not do a workshop, and passed on the first try.

Was the video worth the $140? It seems a necessary evil, I suppose. My clinical experience is a little bit old, but my medical knowledge is very current. I have some patient contact now, but not such that I can practice on patients per se.

Thank you kindly for replying.

Anyone else?

I bought a used one on Ebay. If you go to Ebay and do a search for Excelsior College, you'll find lots of stuff for sale- usually at a cheaper rate than new.

Thanks for the tip. I actually hadn't thought to look there even though I've bought tons of second-hand stuff to supply my Excelsior supplies.

You are allowed a 30minute phone tutorial a week FREE from EC. You ask questions and an EC prof answers, I had my first session Friday it was informative and did I mention FREE:wink2: schedule one by calling 888-647-2388 1-3-1-2

Other than the study guide I have elected to get a Lab simution video off ebay and go to the Chancellors workshop.

I do not have a test date yet so I can't tell you if this is enough or over kill or what.

Not winging it ... just been working too much to respond! ;) I bought study supplies (DVD, careplanning workbook) from Lynn Frederick when I attended her workshop.

I have purchased the ARM off of E-Bay for the IV Push and other supplies for the lab simulation part. I also bought Lisa Arends CPNE Cd which contains alot of information. Mostly just studing the study guide page by page. Of the people that I know who were unsuccessful with the CPNE depended on notes from others or workshops and spent very little time on the study guide. One person I know that failed the exam twice spent most of her time study pneumonics made up by someone else and did not look at the EC Study guide very much:o!! Not too bright.

Well I just got back from Lynn's workshop, after taking Lunah's advice. :) It was wonderful, very informative. Thanks Lunah! If you are unable to attend her workshop, I would recommend her products. I bought her dvd which she goes step by step with the skills for the lab, very good. I also bought her careplanning and PCS simulation books, which I haven't started yet. I did take the care plan conference through Excelsior, which I thought was helpful, and i'm glad I took it, however with going to Lynn's workshop, I don't think I would have needed it. I'm currently in the skills online conference now, and I would not recommend it. I think it was a waste of time and money. I also have the Excelsior dvd you are talking about that goes through the labs and PCS...I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't show everything in the PCS and not everything is correct. The flash cards aren't bad...they are the critical elements for each area of care which are in your study guide.

So is it free? LOL! Okay, that is a good tip. I think overkill is probably good in this situation, though.
