What are your recommendations for Books for nursing (not pre-req)? There are so very many to choose from. Which ones did you like the best and why? Which ones did you use the most? Which books are, in your opinion, must haves?

Thanks for any and all input,

Lesley

Do you mean for specific classes, or for general purpose?

I did distance education but my major was nutrition and not nursing. Sorry I cannot help you.

I have been considering taking nursing through regeants for about 3 years now, but because of financial reasons I am unable to do so right now. However, I have been wanting to get a head start on studying, so hopefully it wont take as long (especially since I have three small children and one on the way) when the time is right to actually enroll. So I just need ideas on which books were your favorites and which were the most helpful? I have a Bachlor of Science in Respiratory Therapy, so I have all the pre-req, so I am just looking at the nursing courses. I also plann to take the optional OB course as that is the specialty that I want to eventually end-up.

Thanks in advance for any help that you may have,

Lesley

If you go to and search by examination, you will find the books and study guides needed for each course. Also, go to and scroll down to Content Guides for Nursing to download the course outlines on what you need to study from each book. These are very helpful, as you will need the same books for some of these courses. I'm finding the books on Amazon.com and Ebay for much cheaper than they sell them in the Excelsior Bookstore, though. I have bought several of the books on Ebay with good results, and for a fraction of the price. I hope this helps!

P.S. Also, Amazon.com has free shipping for items over $25, which most of these are.

ditto to all of the above replies! I am also a gold club member at Books A Million, so with my discount, the books for my next class were even cheaper. My classmates also order from half.com. A good dictionary, such as Taber's, is helpful. For drug reference, I've always liked Springhouse's yearly series, but the Lipincott book I just purchased is also impressive. I also purchased a reference called "RNotes" from FA Davis. It is pocket size, waterproof, and a very good quick reference.
