Anyone familiar with Deaconess College of Nursing?

Hi Everyone,

I am in search of a 100% on-line nursing program - I have a bachelors degree in Business Admin, however, am sick of the corporate world and being completely underappreciated for everything that I do and really want to work somewhere that I can make a difference in people's lives. I have three small children and cannot send them to night care as well as day care so I am on a mission to find an on-line nursing program for someone without any FORMAL clinical skills. I have taken care of my mother who had a liver transplant and my father who has emphysema, diabetes, COPD and osteoarthritis - oh and did I mention that I have three kids?? Anyway, I would sincerely appreciate ANY advice that you can offer to me.

Cbarnett2 is the resident expert on Deaconess. I am sure she will post here soon.!!!

For DCN you will need to set up an established amount of clinical hours in a hospital or nursing facility in your area as a part of the curriculum. You do "formally" register for clincials, you just do them in your area.

You will also need to spend a few days each semester in St Louis for testing and clinical skills evaluation.

I certainly understand that taking care of your ill family members and your own kids has been a challenge. The nurses and students who post however may tell you that nursing school clinicals are by far the most challenging thing they have done.

Bedside nursing skills are one of those things that can only be perfected by doing. It will build on your life experiences.

DCN is a great alternative to those who are able to set up significant clinical time with a capable preceptor in their area.

As Sunnyjohn mentioned DCN is an option for those with a desire to pursue nursing that have no formal clinical background. This program will allow you to get started in nursing by completing your classroom work online and your clinical experiences at a facility local to you. There is a requirement of travel to St Louis at the end of each semester.

I will begin my third semester in August and have been successful so far with this program while continuing to work full time and caring for my 2 children and husband (who has several health challenges).

I spoke to an advisor at Deaconess and they told me about the travel requirement to St. Louis which is an issue for me - I don't know what I would do with my daughters- their dad lives in Fl and is completely uninvolved in their lives.... what do you think about taking all of the "lecture" classes at DCN and transferring them to a local community college where I could do the clinicals? I am really "reaching" here!!!!

Don't be discouraged, keep looking and you will find the right place for your situation.

There are alot of less expensive alternatives to completing your general eds online. I have done all my non nursing classes at my local community college and then had them transferred because DCN is expensive...

Just be sure to have your courses approved by your community college that you want them transferred into, so you don't waste money. I hope this is helpful to you...

I just started DCN in May 2005. If you are from the St. Louis area it may be a good idea but some of the people that are out of town are having problems. First you need to set up all your own clinical sites and still need to fly in for skills validations. I have taken other on-line programs before but this can be very confusing at times. I have talked to others and they say it gets easier as you go along and I hope they are correct. Even though you do not need to go to class I feel we may do more than others because it's hard to know what to study for when there is barely any insruction. We have designated 1 hour chats a week for each class. If your life is as full as it is right now I would consider putting it off for awhile or finding a school in your community. I study on average 7-hours a day and I still could study more if I had the time. Hope this helps and I'm not trying to discourage you but this school is very expensive and you have to be 100% committed to even think about passing. You also have to be very organized and stay on top of everything or it will not work.
