When I started nursing school in 2006 the graduating class ALL had jobs before they took the NCLEX, many had signing bonuses. Those students are part of the reason we are having it hard today as new grads. They took the first job offer. Went through the training then quit. I had an HR Director tell me her hospital stopped mass recruiting new grads because they were sick of pumping 50k into the training of each new nurse only to have them take the training elsewhere. She now insist on a year of nursing experience for an applicant to be considered. When I pointed out to her that by hiring the nurse with only one years experience she was promoting the problem. If someone only has a year of experience that means that nurse is doing to another hospital what she didnt want done to her hospital.. She got real quiet and then hired me. That was 14 months ago. I am now a charge nurse
*** I was just lucky with my timing. I did an LPN to RN program at a local community college. We had lots of nurse recruiters come to try to recruit us. There was even a hospital in MO that sent a recruiter all the way up to Wisconsin and offered free airfare and 2 nights in a nice hotel is we would spend 3 hours in a "why you should work for us" seminar! And this was at a community college ADN program. WHen I graduated I went into a fully paid 9 month Critical Care Nurse Residency program at a large Magnet, teaching / trauma hospital. I got $5K in signing bonus plus $5K in relocation assistance. It was the best decision I could have made as it really jump started my career. All of my class had jobs before they graduated, many where going to nursing school for free on nursing home and hospital scholerships. The hospital where I worked as an LPN offered to pay my way through the RN program. I didn't take them up on it as I had the GI bill and I knew I didn't want to work there after I became an RN, besides it only cost $2600.
My how times have changed. I feel so sorry for those new grads who are unable to find work. I am 100% convinsed that the glut of new grads was brought about deliberatly by false propaganda put out by those who stand to gain financialy from a glut of nurses.
SOmething you nursing students and new grads might not know. Ever since there has been a bunch of grads applying for every open position I have noticed a very different attitude from managment. We used to be treated very carefully and respectfully when they knew they could't easily replace us. Now that we staff RN can be replaced at the drop of a hat I have noticed a lot more poor working conditions and mistreatment by managment. Thankfully my main job is at a great non-Magnet hospital where I am paid and treated very well. Hopefully I have left the crappy nurse treatment by Magnet hospitals behind.

So would you recommend not going to school during these times? I have an interview for a private nursing school and the tuition for 2 years is 41,000 dollars. If I can't get a job off bat to pay for that loan I'll be screwed! O man... and then with these occupy protests won't it get worse? help!
Unless you'll be graduating with at least a BSN, you definitely want to avoid this school. Tuition is in reality sometimes a lot less, depending on the amount of scholarships available from the school

And why would Occupy protests make conditions any worse?

They're only protesting an inefficient system that already exists, and are unlikely to effect any changes, good or bad.

Honestly not trying to be funny but,I think everyone eventually find jobs sometimes its all about who you no.Their are ALWAYS openings for nurses so for you to tell someone not to go into nursing because its no jobs its wrong. One may find a job 6-1year after school its well worth the wait nursing is the best in my opinion,I take my boards so and I dont think I wil have a problem with finding a job.I think you just have to be consistent with your job search....Alot of people dont look into home care agencies(thousands of agencies in NJ),nursing homes, rehab center(kessler),Jails and cancer centers...jobs are their trust me had a friend years ago that could not find a job back when nursing was a big demand...you have to take anything...I hope you people aint go to school for 3-5 yrs just to go change your major! Go out in look for a job everyday rain and snow! Dont just sit home on your computer filling out apps go to places!

In my state they don't accept new grads for home care, most cancer centers, or jails. It took me 9 months to find a job. Luckily I was employed as an LPN during that time. What if I didn't? Those loans kick in 6 months after graduating. What if I had kids to feed? I think it's good to open people's eyes to the reality of the situation before they invest all that time, money, sweat and tears.

yeah thats true, but people need to realize in life things dont always go as planned.

*** i think only a tiny minority of adults are not well aware of that.

people listen to everything someone says, eveyone thinks a job is going to be handed to them

*** well that is what the propaganda has told them. this lying propaganda came from what is usually realiable sourses. it is not unreasonable for a person just entering nursing to think they will be able to find a job easily.

or nursing is all peaches and cream.i have people that work as nurses now and hate it because they thought they was going to be the top notch money makers w/ a easy job!

*** they were either willfully ignorant, or deluding themselves. who goes into nursing to make a lot of money? most nurses don't make anything like enough money to go into this field just for the money.

you have to be honest with me do you no anyone out of a job as a nurse forever its going to happen.

*** can you please rewrite this? it is impossible for me to understand what you are saying.

..i never heard of no more then a year for many but usually 4 to 6 months is the avg.im from jersey and home care agencies hire all day long up here

*** jersey is a small island in the english channel famous for it's dairy cows with a small population. juts how many home care agencies can there be there?

I've never heard of New Mexico referred to as Mexico, but I have heard of New Jersey being called Jersey and since there are people from other countries than USA posting on here I thought maybe you didn't know that. Do I have to really explain that?

*** I have never heard of New Jersey called just Jersey. I admit I have never been there, or for that matter closer than 3 or 4 states away. I don't know anyone from New Jersey, or even from that part of the country. I just thought that, given the quality of writing from a person who puts her bachelors degree education in her name, that maybe English wasn't her first language.
