When is a neglected disease no longer “neglected”?

by HM2VikingRN Staff

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. “We want the most common diseases of the poor. Of the 2.7 billion people in the world who live on less than $2 a day, about half have one — or more — of these.”
Such diseases get less attention because they rarely kill.

But worms can leave a child anemic, urinating blood and too weak to walk to school. They can also blind adults or grotesquely swell legs or scrotums, leaving farmers doomed to starve and entire villages unable to climb out of poverty.

Two weeks ago I watched a special on PBS concerning this effort. They interviewed folks, showed there living conditions and really focused on drug resistant TB in India.

They also filmed a doctor with the CDC or WHO that would "sneak" in his carry-on loaded with free medicines directed for the drug resistant TB. If stopped at the customs he would have lost his lot as it was illegal to bring the drug into the country.

There were other countries aggressively attempted to treat for polio as well. Very interesting documentary.
