I put Vick's under my nose every time I feel stuffy. How can inhaling it cause pneumonia?

How many generations of kids grew up smelling Vapo-Rub or Mentholatum as Mom smeared the thick goop on our rattly chests? It may not have done us any good, but it sure felt soothing at the time, and surely the TLC that came with it didn't hurt anything. I can hardly bear to think that something so comforting as a chest rub at bedtime, followed by a warm blanket and a good-night kiss, could make things worse.
I remember my Grandma coming into my room when I was sick. She'd sit at the side of the bed, softly humming and singing to me while rubbing VICKS on my neck (I usually had swollen glands or something).
It was such a wonderful feeling.....even for a sick little kid! I felt so loved and safe and secure!
I miss my Grandma. I get teary-eyed just thinking about how much I miss her.

Interesting how 280,000 Americans can die every year from the wrong RX med or too much RX med or RX med interactions, but a child gets some inflammation from VICKS and all of the sudden it must be feared. Wow! I would be fearing the Pharmacist before I would the Vicks Vaporub. Same thing with the VAERS reports. Don't see any precautions going up about those "studies". Leave the Vicks alone. Works great if you put it on the soles of the feet as well, as it can travel up the meridians and the eucalyptus can work its magic.

Chris Rock's father was the same way about Robutussin. When Chris broke his ankle as a kid, is father rubbed Robutussin on it.

I never remember my mother using VapoRub. I never liked the smell. My mother didn't like OTC drugs in general. Anything from the doctor was okay, but otherwise she believed in fluids and guided imagery, which never worked for me. She treated coughing by ordering you not to cough.

Bull, in recent years more and more stand by OTC's are being found to suddenly be dangerous and removed from the market. Old medications are well known, trusted and cheap. Newer ones might be passed over due to unfamiliarity, and higher price. It's interesting to note replacements are put out that are 3 times more expensive and dont do a darn thing.
