Viagra-popping seniors lead the pack for STDs

Something else to consider when you are doing assessments and taking a history from patients. In my very limited experience, I haven't run into any STD's in older men, but I guess I should start being on the lookout.

A very scary trend. Many seniors think they are at very low risk for STDs simply due to their age. They could not be more wrong. Pregnancy is no longer a concern, but no one is exempt from STDs; they can strike any sexually-active person, as this proves.

just as a quick aside... while they were not quite in the elderly category, my in-laws had been told they would never be able to have another baby years before, my mother-in-law hadn't had a period for more
than a year, plus they had a daughter who was a college student.

by the end of december, they also had a new baby boy!! surprise!:d surprise!:d

I read somewhere that seniors are among the fastest-growing populations for HIV infection.

One thing I've learned in geriatrics is that the urge never really dies, and life-long STDs are exactly that.

About HIV. I saw something years ago when Viagra came out. It might have been 20/20 or something, IDK. I remember that they discussed a problem in the retirement communities in FL. How these old guys were screwing around on their wives and it was so sad to see these poor little old ladies getting hurt so badly. One little old lady got HIV from her husband. Seems these old guys were getting hookers as well as screwing the little old lady next door. Still makes me want to cry when I think of it.

Elderly men are a target for active addicts because of their monthly Social Security Checks. I've seen this again and again. Indeed it is sad.

My first thought was...45 is "elderly"?

Yes, I heard about this, too. It was on CNN or some other cable news stations. It was Lady Lake, FL, and they were the top city in FL for STD's, beating out college campuses. It just that there were many more women than men, and they (the men) would have multiple sex partners w/o protection. Maybe that generation thinks they may be exempt from STD's, and they USUALLY don't have to worry about pregnancy. Therefore, lack of protection. Very sad. It was all happening in one retirement community, one that has national advertising for a community in FL.
