Researchers at the University of California, San Diego are testing a type of immunotherapy for melanoma using engineered herpes viruses. Using a needle similar to that used for the flu vaccine, researchers inject the herpes virus into a melanoma lesion. The idea is the presence of the new virus alerts the body's immune system to attack the cancerous area. Daniels said the virus is engineered to be safe for non-cancerous cells, and the idea of using viruses to fight cancer has been around for hundreds of years.

You know people are going to be worried about getting herpes from it On one hand, I'll take herpes over cancer but on the other hand, any kind of repeated irritation could cause another type of cancer. Depends on the individual situation and the stage that the melanoma's in, I guess. But very interesting.

I've had shingles 3 times on my face and head, but I didn't die-wanted to it hurt so bad. But it didn't kille me and Melanoma will. My DH has an appt Wednesday to have a carcinoma wider excision done. I'm praying hard as I can.

My Mama had a melanoma discovered about a year befor her death. She had the wide excision done maybe 5 times until the area went from pencil point to silver dollar size and then she passed away from community pneumonia.

Haven't they been doing this with BCG for years?

And why does the article obsess over herpes being a sexually transmitted disease? Herpes need not be transmitted sexually, and the article fails to mention that almost everyone has type 1 or type 2 herpes anyway. Pretty shoddy journalism. Just saying.
