US Government Recruiting Foreign RN's/MD's!

by awsmfun Premium Member

WASHINGTON – Struggling to find enough doctors, nurses and linguists for the war effort, the Pentagon will temporarily recruit foreigners who have been living in the United States on student and work visas, or with refugee or political asylum status.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps to recruit certain legal residents whose critical medical and language skills are "vital to the national interest," officials said, using for the first time a law passed three years ago.

Though the military previously has taken recruits with green cards seeking permanent residency, Gates' action enables the services to start a one-year pilot program to find up to 1,000 foreigners who have lived in the states legally for at least two years on certain types of temporary visas...

I think it's a good idea and they are legal to the US and they consider resident here. I don't see any problem with that. I'm a nursing student in LB, CA. I'll be graduating in a week and half. I congratulate us all to suffer for a year long of nursing.

Given the long and rich history of doctors' involvements in terrorist/revolutionary organizations, I feel nervous about the prospect of foreign physicians in American uniforms.

TiredMD,
I've served with non-citizen Soldiers... as they enlist in our combat arms and support our country... after several years they gain options to apply for citizenship.. The guys I worked with were stellar and I have no qualms in supporting them and trusted them with my life.

I am an active-duty Navy physician, and serve with many fine non-citizens.

But there is a difference between an 18yo kid who enlists in the military to make a brighter future for himself, and a 30yo foreign-educated physician with a history of unknown contacts in foreign nations that it will be difficult to adequately explore during background screening.

I can also tell you that physicians are privy to far more sensitive information than a junior enlisted sailor/Marine.

I'm still uncomfortable with this whole thing.

TiredMD, do you remember this incident of foreign doctors involved in terrorist bombings in England last year? Ironically, I remember some of their patients being interviewed that said what good doctors they were. Some tried to get medical work visas in the U.S. Scary.

I have no problem with immigrants, or foreign-trained RNs. I have a huge problem with hospitals that actively recruit foreign employees while simultaneously refusing to hire Americans.

That may be true for physicians in medicine, but how can you surgeons be religious fanatics when you are God?

The military has a BSN requirement. How about allowing some kind of provisional commission to ADN nurses that are on track for their BSN to fill the needs?
