Sounds like a great idea. There was a Condition L the other day and the description of the person was extremely vague. The description sounded like it could've been almost anybody.

I have a feeling upmc is going to have to pay heavily for their mistakes. If there were any cover ups, it will come out and make it worse to fight the most probable lawsuit by this family.

I don't think they attempted any cover-up, but I do think they'll pay heavily. I suspect they'll just settle out of court in this case, since they have no leg to stand on. Maybe that's why our overtime is GONE and they're restricting us to minimum staffing. They've been trying to save on payroll, sending people home all the time lately. No one has any PTO time left.

You don't think it's more likely that's due to the recession?

I'm sure it's due to the recession (although they are building 2 new hospitals at the same time that they're crying about money???) I was being facitious. The timing coincided with the missing patient incident...now all of a sudden we're cutting back on payroll...

It is a great plan to modify their process, just sad that a death ocurred for this to be looked at closer..
The "electronic trace system" is a great idea. We have it at our facility for medical hold patients. It runs exactly like the "HALO" system for the infants. And alerts staff, and security, the instant there is movement abnormal to the patients routine.

I wish you all the best with the cut-backs that have been made at your facility.

I think that Condition L is a good idea, but I think UPMC could do more. I think lowering their pt/nurse ratios (I've seen their nurses have 8-10 pts easily, especially on night shifts). To me, those kind of ratios are just asking for trouble.

The timing did not coincide. Departmental managers were required to reduce costs well before the unfortunate patient incident on Dec 4th.

Not to mention the 500 people laid off back in October.

I hardly think it would be fiscally advantageous for them to bail out of, say, the new CHP given what has been spent and how close to completion it is. I agree it seems crazy that they are planning to START building another facility out east at this time.

Maybe on your unit the staffing cutbacks happened sooner, but not on mine. Our staffing was minimized in early December.

Lighten up. I KNOW THAT IT'S NOT RELATED. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment!!!!!

And UPMC certainly isn't hurting for money. I can almost guarantee you our executives still got astronomical bonuses this year.
