LOVE this idea.........I could definitely say something about the areas in my city at any rate.

At any rate, we all know some of the nicest, chattiest nurses who should have gone into hosting something on a cruise ship instead. Disorganized, slow, etc.

Give me a gruff, rough, tough, experienced ER nurse any day when my children are crumping - and I don't care if they curse like a sailor as long as they can assess an impending system failure and get on it, yelling stat requests as loud as needed.

Hospital US News & World Report rates nursing care quality
U.S. News & World Report has released a list ranking well-known, high-ranking hospitals on the quality of nursing care. What metrics were used? Pressure ulcer rates? Nosocomial pneumonia? Length of stay? No. The only criterion was "politeness and communicativeness."

Read the story here: Which Best Hospitals Have Great (and Not So Great) Nurses

Many nurses have posted comments after the article, protesting the claim that politeness and communicativeness are measures of nursing care quality. If you think that this methodology is flawed, please log in and post your own comment. I did! In the days since this article was originally posted, its wording has been softened, apparently because of the many RNs logging in to complain. We can change things!

dumb animals; just like self appointed JCAHO and Magnet. Soon there will be money attached to it once they amass enough to hire lobbyists. Fecal bags!

Eight of the hospitals on the list in the original post also rate in the top for pain control, I can't help but think that may be a factor in how patients perceive their stay. http://health.usnews.com/articles/he...ated-links:TOP

If you haven't yet, follow the link and read the comments. They are excellent! (Except maybe the misinformed RN who says nurses are always ranked lower than docs in communication skills. I've seen data that say otherwise.)

Incredible. I was actually excited when I read the headline because I thought US News understood the value of good nursing care and thus the rankings. They sure taught me a lesson, didn't they?

Patient satisfaction surveys weigh responses to requests, courtesy, and more

Among elite centers in the U.S. News "America's Best Hospitals" rankings that reported patient satisfaction survey results for the year ended December 2008, the 10 percent below were judged best for nursing care. They had the highest percentages of patients who said their nurses were "always" courteous, listened carefully, and gave clear explanations.

I'll have to go searching but I seem to remember a recent article on patients perception of nurse competency. I think it was in one of the AACN critical care journals. The nurses who were friendly were also seen as the most competent. Of course the nurses in these places, I know nurses working in more than one of these are also hospitals that place staff satisfaction on par with customer satisfaction.

But the problem with this entire question, as I see it, is how many members of the general public even have any frame of reference to evaluate whether a nurse is competent or not in any meaningful way? Most of what we do to improve their health/condition while they're hospitalized, they either aren't aware of (catching potential errors/side effects and preventing them), or they don't like it because it doesn't feel good at the time it's being done and they'd rather we wouldn't (like getting them up to walk after surgery!)
