http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/07/30....ap/index.html

Disturbing allegations, to say the least.

I agree, how horrible if true. My question is what did the nurses see that made them report this??

Is betadine used internally? Isn't it just topical?

I just found this article from the LA Times with much more information and specifics:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...=la-home-local

If you click "single page" at the bottom of the article you can view it in its entirety without registering with the website.

I'm sorry, this article makes me sick. He gave the order, a nurse obeyed it w/o questioning, and the rest of the staff stood by and watched then complained after the man passed. It is wrong on so many levels I don't know where to begin!

I don't know. I'm a little skeptical of these allegations.

200mg of morphine? 80 of Ativan? If that was administered, wouldn't that kill him alot faster than the next day?

Disgusting if it is true.

My impression, from reading the article, was that he survived the ativan and morphine and that these drugs were given in the high doses by the surgeon to 'tip him over the edge' yet they didn't work. Thirty minutes passed, the patient was still alive, and the organs were not usable. Then the patient died seven hours later because he couldn't survive off the vent. He must have had tolerance to benzos and narcotics.

That is a freaking lot of morphine and ativan for anyone - and this guy weighed 80 pounds. . . I'm skeptical of the news' reports.

Crux of the matter here and why OR nurses reported situation is transplant doctor was dictating care prior to patient being declared dead by PCP....seeing 80lb patient being given this quantity of drugs was also concern:

Late in the evening of Feb. 3, he was taken to the operating room and removed from life support. As at least six people stood by, including Navarro's treating physician, Roozrokh ordered a total of 200 milligrams of the narcotic morphine and 80 milligrams of the sedative Ativan for him, according to a report by federal inspectors.

The case came under scrutiny by medical and law enforcement authorities after the operating room staff expressed concerns about the actions of the doctor and of the nurse who was administering the drugs. Under state law, transplant doctors cannot direct the care of organ donors before they are declared dead.
