Swine flu spreading at 'unbelievable' rate: WHO

by brian Staff

PARIS — Swine flu spreads four times faster than other viruses and 40 percent of the fatalities are young adults in good health, the world's top health official warned in an interview appearing Saturday.

"This virus travels at an unbelievable, almost unheard of speed," World Health Organisation Director General Margaret Chan told France's Le Monde daily in an interview.

"In six weeks it travels the same distance that other viruses take six months to cover," Chan said.

"Sixty percent of the deaths cover those who have underlying health problems," Chan said. "This means that 40 percent of the fatalities concern young adults -- in good health -- who die of a viral fever in five to seven days.

"This is the most worrying fact," she said, adding that "up to 30 percent of people in densely populated countries risked getting infected."

Chan's warning came a day after the WHO said the virus had overtaken others to become the most prevalent flu strain.

"Evidence from multiple outbreak sites demonstrates that the A(H1N1) pandemic virus has rapidly established itself and is now the dominant influenza strain in most parts of the world," the UN agency said in a statement.

This confuses me a little because they've got it divided into the young adults/people with underlying conditions. It doesn't mention the young healthy people under 18 who haved died from it. And I know of several.

And this should not come as a surprise to anyone. The healthcare community and the CDC have been telling people for months that H1N1 is not attacking the usual elderly, but is attacking young, normally healthy people.

For hospital nurses we need to insist our facilities plan for increased census in ICU as well as education, isolation , and protective equipment.

…Larger numbers of severely ill patients requiring intensive care are likely to be the most urgent burden on health services, creating pressures that could overwhelm intensive care units and possibly disrupt the provision of care for other diseases…

…Perhaps most significantly, clinicians from around the world are reporting a very severe form of disease, also in young and otherwise healthy people, which is rarely seen during seasonal influenza infections. In these patients, the virus directly infects the lung, causing severe respiratory failure. Saving these lives depends on highly specialized and demanding care in intensive care units, usually with long and costly stay.

During the winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries have viewed the need for intensive care as the greatest burden on health services. Some cities in these countries report that nearly 15 percent of hospitalized cases have required intensive care.
Preparedness measures need to anticipate this increased demand on intensive care units, which could be overwhelmed by a sudden surge in the number of severe cases.
Vulnerable groups
An increased risk during pregnancy is now consistently well-documented across countries. This risk takes on added significance for a virus, like this one, that preferentially infects younger people….

… Obesity, which is frequently present in severe and fatal cases, is now a global epidemic…

ugh, i am dreading the fall already.
This past spring an employee at our hospital contracted the H1N1 flu, brought it home to her family that included a newborn of 3 months!yikes! She was actually able to file workman's comp for it, so her husband,( a co-worker) told me.

Yes. The problem is, we already know there are not going to be enough vents, particularly pediatric vents if it hits harder in the populations it's already hitting. Hospitals are already having a hard time getting N-95 masks. I talked to an occupation health nurse in a hospital near me and she said that all their suppliers are way back ordered.

If the acuity does hit us hard it is indeed going to be a very rough flu season.

Cross your fingers everybody.

my family and I both got the swine flu this summer and it was not fun..I ended up with pneumonia. My lungs never hurt so bad.
I and my family will still get the h1n1 vaccine shot's when they come out in October.

Hmm..

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I was offered the vaccine since I'm pregnant, but declined.

Why will you be getting the shots when you already have immunity?
