We have had a few postpartum moms that were diagnosed with it prior to delivery; I took care of one not too long ago. Our hospital took care of a baby whose mom died from it shortly after delivering prematurely. I realize it can be a big deal, but the second I heard about the manufacturers being exempted across the board from liability due to ill effects of the vaccine, that made up my mind. Baby #2 may be on the way soon and I am surely not getting an untested vaccine put in my body with that happening - catch 22 though, since pregnancy would put me in an immunosuppressed state.

OUr hospital is gearing up and expecting nurses to sign up for one weekend and one weekday to be called in extra. You have to sign up for the day your on call. Guess what our on call pay means 2 dollar and hour. However, you have to be called in cancelled and called in again to be on call pay. Hows your hospital gearing up? We also had a article place in our restroom wondering if nurses should be charged for death of patient if we dont get the shot. GESH! I would like to see a few guinea pigs getting the shot before we do . I would like to hear about side effects first. If the nurses are required doctors should be too. Ill be rolling up my arm for the shot I guess. I'm hoping its overblown . BUt if we are overloaded, overworked and stressed guess what . We will be really vulnerable to getting it! I wonder if they will check to see if our immunity to H1N1 vaccine was effective?

I'm curious as to whether health care facilities will change their call-in policies because of H1N1. In the LTCF in which I worked, employees were only allowed a certain number of absences per year (eight, maybe?) before they would be subject to disciplinary action. It didn't matter if the employee who called in was absent because he/she was sick, had a sick child, unable to get to work because of bad weather or if he/she simply wanted to go to the high school football state finals and couldn't find someone to work for him/her. An absence was an absence was an absence---unless the employee got too many, then he/or she was given a warning and then fired if there were additional absences.

People were so afraid to call in at this facility that they came to work sick. If facilities like this particular LTCF continue to have such rigid policies when H1N1 hits, they will be having direct patient care workers on the floor when they're sick.

Illness with H1N1 is not counted against us at my facility. They do not want us to work if we have it.

What do you think about the regular flu shot as far as timing? I usually get it in October so it will last the whole season. However, we apparently already have tons of Influenza A in Texas already so I am thinking about getting it early, but then I will be uncovered at the usual peak time of Jan/Feb? Any thoughts?

Last year my MD recommeded getting the seasonal flu shot as early as possible, then getting a second one in 2-3 months. I never got the second one last year, but I think I will this year just in case. I'm a school nurse and have only seen one febrile illness so far (knock on wood) and it was GI based without resp s/s. I am waiting for the "snot" to hit the fan around here.

One year my husband, who does NOT work in health care, got two seasonal flu vaccines within a short time of each other. One was through a flu clinic and the other was through the National Guard. He didn't know he was going to get vaccinated by the Guard that year so he went with the flu clinic first. He was horribly sick for about a day, febrile, achy.

I still razz him about this.

I found out from a friend who's a school nurse; it hasn't hit the papers, and they sent a letter home to the parents saying there had been a swine flu case in the school system, but not saying which school, and not mentioning the fatality. They're trying so hard not to "panic" everyone, they're really not being very helpful -- and they get reimbursement based on numbers of kids in the classroom....everyone goes home, there's another whack to the budget.

if the kid was on a sports team, you'd want to know if their team played your kid's team, rather than "it's in the community." I mean, there's a difference between "there are bears in the county" and "a bear ate a kid next door."

Eh, I find that a bit fishy. "It hasn't hit the papers yet"? Normally, our corrupt media will find anyway they can to open up a story to "scare" the public. And especially about this. I'm just finding it a bit hard to believe that they would let a story like this go, especially since it involves a child who died from the swine flu; regardless.

Just my thoughts..
