We just had an elementary school aged kid die in our county yesterday -- swine flu. Kid had NO prior med hx -- no asthma, no diabetes, was just a normal kid.

I can't remember (BN or AN, before nursing or after nursing) of hearing of an otherwise healthy 9 year old dying from the flu in August....

Yes, I heard this on the radio. We have to watch for this. It seemed that our elderly are immune to this virus. A friend of mine, an RN, was joking she will start seeing people wearing masks soon.

She has a good sense of humor. But I hope this won't happen.

This past spring when it first became so publicized by the media our ED was absolutely overrun with every person who had a cough. Especially if they or someone from their family had been in Mexico. It lasted for weeks and was just a mad house. If we get hit harder this fall on top of regular flu season I don't know that we have the staff to cover it.

I absolutely think that the media has blown this out of proportion and created a mass fear. I dread this fall!

Panic is not good.
But we need to prepare.
If not the worst fears could become reality.

I was shocked when I got it 2 months ago (and worried) but held off going to the hospital cause I didn't want to be sequestered and travel visa denied so I rode it out in self isolation for 2 weeks before I went outside again. The airport in Japan has a thermo-sensor you walk past (from the bird flu days) and an alarm goes off if you're febrile and a doctor is waiting in a side office to see you. I'd say 25% wore masks in Asia and over here no one...strange (but they always have worn masks even before bird flu).
I keep telling people that there was a real bad outbreak in 1999/2000 and no one can remember it. It tended to attack the very young, sick and elderly like traditional flu but it still put a ton of people in the hospital. I remember in the middle of it all I retired for the first time. We were on emergency staffing which was 1 RN to 16 patients with two LPNs, plus the phone kept ringing and it was the supervisor saying "can you take another patient". I gave my notice and got out of there. I remember I was so glad I did because it raged for another 6 to 8 weeks. Very few people seem to remember, even though at the time there were a hundred threads by nurses ranting and raving about the lack of staff and the work loads. The threads were from all over the world by the way.

I think it's important to be prepared but count me as one of the ones that thinks the hype has been blown way out of proportion to the actual problem. Count me as one of the ones who is also very skeptical of the vaccine.

We've got a few nursing staff out sick with it now at home. We have three people on ventilators cllinging to life now, and a couple more on med-surg that are ill.

Guinea pig or not, media hype or not, I'll be rolling up my sleeve when the vaccine comes out.

I'm in the PICU and lemme just say that we are gearing up!! We definately expect to be very very busy this fall. I believe fear is good...panic is not...panic is avoided with information but i don't think that the danger is in "overreacting"...it's more dangerous to "underreact". The saying goes..."it's all fun and games till somebody get's hurt!" in other words underreacting leads to not being prepared...not being prepared leads to not being able to face the problem IF it gets out of hand. I have always subscribed to the idea that it's best to be prepared for the worse and hope for the best. Those who "underreact" before hand are more likely to panic when the going gets tough...

...now the vaccine is a whole'nother ball of wax...not sure what to think about that but the vaccine is NOT the meat and potatoes of prevention for this...it wont even be out in time!
