Re: Survey: 87% favor mandatory health worker H1N1 shots
My intial thought on this is that most peoples response is an emotional one, and not one based on sciente. REAL SCIENCE and not National Enquirer science.
I laugh at the nurses who are complaining about having to wear a mask, "becaue it isn't proven". I think is the same thing that was said about handwashing. I've gotten flue shots every year for 35 years now, as well as vaccines like anhrax. I had my first anthrax vaccine at 16 when working for a local Vetinarian. One person posted a ling about the side effects that was focusing on the thermisol and early alzhiemers. I bet that person has at least one alluminum pan in their kitchen, and that was listed up there with the thermisol.
All medications are toxins/poisins in one way or another and it's a risk benift analysis in their use. I do agree I"m not sure about the goverment mandting them, but I look at polio eradication, and I think to myself, well that worked.
We that work in health care are in an unusual position in society. One of our basic tenents is to first do no harm. Passing on N1N1 to a patient would be doing harm, so I understand the public thought on the matter. But this whole deal proves that nurses are people also. You can go though threads here about people going home, getting undressed in the garage and putting their scrubs in the wash right away with hot water and bleach so they don't bring anything into the house, you see nurses who refuse to follow the simple universal precations.
Geting the vaccine should be a choise and not mandated in my opinion, BUT, those who choose not to get it should be ready to take the consequences. Los of employment in same cases maybe, maybe something simple like wearing a mask, or getting their temp taken before they come to work and if they are febrile, sent home. That is what PTO/Sick days are for anyway.
It is a risk/benifit anaylsis in any case to get the vaccine or not. in '76 there were 500 cases in GB in the millions of vaccines given. Many more people died with the disease. My choice when I evaluated the risk/benifits is to be first in line to get the vaccine. That is my choice and mine alone.
So my thought in this is
NO to
MANDATED, but unless you are in a specific risk group you should be voluntarily getting the vaccine.
