Schiavo's Nurse to Keep License

by JohnBee

PLANT CITY -- Nurse Carla Sauer-Iyer won't lose her nursing license for discussing former patient Terri Schiavo's condition on television last year.

A Florida Board of Nursing panel dismissed a complaint against Sauer-Iyer on Thursday after a lawyer representing the Department of Health said rules requiring nurses not to disclose patient information also require them to report ``apparent neglect and abuse'' of patients.

I hope the Florida Board of Nursing adds the explicit right to advocate for patients part of their Nurse Practice Act!

We all know we have the obligation.

"Report," yes -- but to the appropriate state authorities, not the national media!! I think it's a shame she's keeping her license; I thought her behavior was extremely self-serving, inappropriate, and unprofessional.

What did you expect?

The Gov weighed in on it. That made it a political issue.

You don't diss the man that signs off on your budget - Politics 101.

Lets keep on track with THIS issue please:
nurses not to disclose patient information publically while law requiring nurses to report ``apparent neglect and abuse'' of patients.

Report it to the proper authorities, yes. Blather to the media for 15 minutes of fame? No.

I am disappointed she was not sanctioned in some way. Heaven help the pts. she may care for in the future. Her unprofessional, self-righteous actions put the confidentiality of her future pts. in jeopardy. I'm ashamed to know she is part of our profession.

I agree. It is not appropriate to discuss a patient on TV news.

Particularly since nearly 10y had passed since she took care of that pt. How could she possibly have given a credible opinion about TS status?

I'm disappointed that a facility hired this blabbermouth.
