The RN Jobs Squeeze

Nurses hunting for jobs are caught in some unprecedented trends, says Peter Buerhaus, RN, PhD, FAAN, a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing. Since the economy has declined, nurse employment has actually surged, he says. But that’s because experienced nurses are extending their reach, taking on new jobs or more hours to fill recession-related income gaps in their households, he says. Research by Buerhaus and colleagues estimates hospital RN employment increased by 243,000 full-time-equivalent positions in 2007-08. Read more »

The point is that unserved areas need to recruit in areas where students are having a a hard time finding a job.

Nursing executives need to spend the resources they use to recruit international nurses for domestic nurses.

Last the job market will recover.

Please...spare me these articles. I know too many new grads that cannot find employment or experience nurses taking months to find a job.

This is what I was told when I was denied a job because they only took students that they gave scholarships. He said it is slow for now but that when the recession is over the nursing shortage will be tenfold.

The nursing shortage is HERE...and will get worse. .. Retiring staff is not replaced, nurse to patient ratios are increased, No joke intended, but when staffing "numbers" include a ".5"...where exactly does one find half of a person??

This is the exact problem I faced when I graduated from nursing school with my RN in May of 2009. Most of the surrounding hospitals decided to eliminate they nursing inturnship programs to save money due to a low census. I had to take a job in a nursing home. I have been gaining experence but it has been quite stressful. Our company has decided that we only need two nurses and three nurses aids for 35 residents.

I had trouble getting a job with three years experience on a med-surg floor and telemetry!

I dont see this being an issue.

I had no trouble when I graduated, but now it is a different story.

Very sad, I wish they would tell the truth, these poor new grads.
