Re: The RN Jobs Squeeze
This was partially true in the city where I graduated from years ago. There was a shortage in that area, the hospital paid the local college something like $250,000 a year to turn out qualified and floor ready nurses, in addition there was scholarship money available if you chose to commit to working for the hospital for two years after graduating. This helped the hospital guarantee a future work force and that they were trained in policy and procedure according to that facility. However, the hospital was large enough they needed to find other ways to staff when short and they did hire from the outside, and used agency. It was approximately 250 bed hospital, in one of the most desirable areas of the country to live, yet they still had shortages.

Hi Cindy V. RN: Forgive me for not understanding the point of your post. How is this relevant to what is happening now? There certainly is no shortage now, and I do not believe it will improve very much because corporations have found a way to continue foreign over American nurses since they and foreign nurses have such a stronghold. I just don't see a good future for American nurses since corporations are having such success hiring foreign nurses. Look around you, other non-nursing businesses are hiring foreign. Look at the success of jobs that have been lost to other Americans and will never be returned to America. Even with the anticipated "shortage when baby boomers are upon us," what makes you think they will all of a sudden start hiring American nurses? The American minority is only beginning in my opinion.

P.S. I don't know what State you live in, but health care is flooded with foreign workers. Not to mention how nursing jobs are being picked apart and downsized. Take a look at some of the job descriptions on the internet. For example, a "nurse tech" duty does cna work, ekg tech duties, other duties as required. Take a look at job descriptions, especially for techs. This is having a heavy impact on nurses and lack of nursing jobs. Do you think this is going to change back to Americans? Who do you think is sailing high in this recession? Who do you think is going to continue on a downhill trend?
How many times have you heard on the news "jobs that are not coming back?" What kind of omen do you think this is? Corporations are continuing to break down Americans to continue their unprecedented greed. Isn't this recession a good indicator of their continued success of greed?

Re: The RN Jobs Squeeze
Am I the only one weirded out by the use of "Caucasian" to signify an American as opposed to a foreign nurse? Last time I checked there were non-white Americans.
I think it's totally appropriate to question the importation of foreign nurses when nurses are struggling to find jobs, but phrasing it as a "Caucasian vs Asian nurses" (or similar) is making this a discussion about race, not labor politics.

hiddencat: I think your post has perfect merit. You can count me guilty also. I think the problem is trying to use the right word to avoid being cast as a racist. I believe that American would be the correct way. Black is certainly not Caucasian, nor are legal immigrants.
Thank you for bringing this out.

Not the need to save a buck to make Blue Cross/Blue Shield have a larger profit at the end of the quarter. The number of experienced nurses out of work in my area alone--Chicago--is outstanding. We are not being hired. Yet, more Philipino nurses are. Am I jealous--YES! I need to WORK!!! By the way, where do you live? Maybe I will move again if I can find a job there.
I have posted on another thread that SDSU in San Diego has a program that hires new grads. Guess what! It's unofficial name is "Little Manila."

Re: The RN Jobs Squeeze
I do agree it was neglectful to leave those Americans out of the discussionno of the caucasion race. My ISSUE is with "importing" forieng workers into our county to take jobs, in this case we are discussing NURSING jobs- RN, LPN, Nursing assistnts because I have seen MANY of our Black American youths male and female as CNA's be done out of their jobs which they do VERY well and with kindness and respect for this country"s elderly and dying especially the LTC- That POOP Hole- Genesis, Burlinton WOODs in Burlington NJ!!! by IMPORTS from Nigeria, SiraLanka, Jamaca, India, Liberia- They cannot speak ENGLISH clear enough for, our elderly, mentally disabled or I - former RN supervisor, to understand and get away with a ton of insubordination and disrespect to the citizens of THIS country. On aide from LIBERIA to a dying (end stage cardiac disease- not confused) to 'pee' the bed rather than give that woman a bedban in her final days- THE FAMILY called am ambulance and took thier mother out of that place. Outrageous. and there were MANY more such events with these IMPORTS. I was also working per deim in a hospital and still do and the same crap- these RN imports don't think they have to emply patient's ostomy bags because they 'STINK' The Nursing administration LOVES these imports because THEY DO NOT COMPLAINT and that makes ADMINISTRATION's job ALOT easier: a Pleasureable and Stressfree work enviorment for these morons. No COMPLAINING, no ISSUES, NO STRESS, no problems and out the door at 4;30-5;00 to kiss the kiddies and hubbie or wifey-poo. WE, americans ( black, white hispanic, those of us born and raised in the U.S.A) however have been brought up with the U.S. Constitution- Freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom to vote = freedom to voice( and all that jazz that goes with this unamiable rights to being an AMERICAN) our opinions and QUESTION authority including Nursing Administration. These CEO"s and Administrator want NO CONTEST- paycheck, big bucks and leave for the day and they will squash, suspend, fire and defame your character if they have to, and replace you with an IMPORT for cheaper and less lip.!! The IMPORTS have been used to this submission, closed mouth behavior in their own countries and can play this game over here with our jobs!! ( one IMPORT from Sierra Leon told me she FLED her counrty because the soldiers of the government raided her village and were cutting the villiagers hands and feet off- she is an LPN- educated in RUSSIA, and ENGLAND and now here in a NJ nursing job) she will work 11-7 and come back 8 hours later and work 3-11 then 11-7 again!!! Some filipino's work 6-7 days a week and send the money back to thier families in the philipines- that is called SOJOURNING- a term in into. to sociology. The continental Africians, jamacians and other caribbean islanders do the same-they work tons of our overtime and send the money back to family in their native countries- who live like kings and we are out jobs. If you notice in places with no unions they are the ones who are offered the OT first- management knows they will ALWAYS do it. The Indians/hindu live in multi-generational house holds and pool thier money. They do not have the opportunity to come to America unless they are already wealthy - there are only 2 CLASSES in INDIA ( a CAST SYSTEM)- the very RICH and the very POOR (the street beggars) It all comes down to money (cheaper wages) and no backtalk. The Nusing Administration and CEO's are the new slavemasters- only now it's against the law to whip/and physically strike somone.
