That's sad. Hope the off duty security guard will be protected instead of tried for murder or something. I don't know how things work when an officer or security guard has to use their weapon. I think investigations are usually done. Hopefully everything will turn out fine.

Don't bet on it. The patient's family is probably already being surrounded by lawyers promising mega bucks for "wrongful death."

What surprises me is that this kind of thing does not happen more often than it does. Hospitals are full of people with psychiatric disorders, some being treated, most not. They come in drunk or under the influence of some other substance and you can be sure that many have weapons on them. I am not talking about patients here (although you have trouble with that as well). I am talking about the visitors. I work on a large med surg floor and I just wait for the day when someone walks off the elevator with a gun and starts shooting at at everyone. And you never know what is going to set them off.

I don't know much about law but they are going to rip the poor security guards to shreds not only did he not work for that hospital, but he was off duty too and shot the patient in the head.(and my question is since when are security guards armed?) I can just image all the things they will say to make him look like the bad guy.

My heart grieves. Very difficult to navigate that situation mentally when one is confronted with it. One must have alot of training to carry an armed weapon and should be trained as to when it is appropriate to use and how.

Again, awaiting to read the outcome. And it's national affects.
