At the end of the day it really is a moral issue. I mean, are we (as healthcare professionals) really going to agree that it is okay the way the system now works? A.People with no insurance can't afford it and come to the ER for something they could have treated in early stages at home, they are rushed in and out because they have no insurance. B. People with insurance can't get what the doctor ordered (eventhough they HAVE insurance) so they are rushed in and out-or tested for things that the dr knows he will get paid for-not related to what in the heck they came in for or C. Elderly patients with Medicare allowed to come and go as they please for every sniffle because doctors are milking that system because its the only insurance plan they can get paid for! Im not mad at them, they want to make money too, but people are saying a government plan won't work, but Medicare works-it works too well, that's why doctors have long ago decided to make up what they missed as far as payment in the private sector with Medicare patients. It is my opinion that any doctor upset at the health reform is because Medicare will be cut and waste will be eliminated. Thats why these docs are mad.

Even if you dont agree with all that- Is there honestly a person out there who wants to see the insurance companies continue to monopolize healthcare and get FILTHY RICH while we allow it to continue? Really? Is it okay the way we have allowed them to treat us and our families?

What people need to realize is that this plan is whats going to keep healthcare professionals in high demand for a long time to come- esp. the primary care sector- millions of more people are now going to be taking care of themselves.

Fun with numbers! So they take the number of Docs who favor private insurance with public option and add that to the ones who favor public option only to come up with 73% favoring public option. Using their logic we could take the docs who favor private insurance with public option and add that to those who favor private insurance only. Hmmm, that's 90% who favor private insurance! I guess we need to really make sure that survives!

The only thing MORALLY WRONG about the whole thing is the ability of anyone, government or private insurance, to maintain control over your healthcare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Health "insurance" is not insurance at all. It is a moneymaking scheme run by people atempting to make a profit.

Government "care" is in reality no different, except the level of care is lower and managed by people with a track record of FAILURE who don't know *** they're doing. Kinda like the public school system and our post WWII military.

THE REALITY:

The only FAIR thing to do is pay for all basic expenses out of pocket. Primary care visits, teeth cleaning etc. This would create competition and LOWER COST.

Major surgery, unexpected accidents, cancer treatment, etc. would be covered by purchasing catastrophic insurance.

This requires a sea change in thinking, but it would lower cost in the long run and put way more control in the hands of you and I.

Interesting theory you have here for insurance reform. The main problem with your suggestion is it brings us back to square one. First- How many people can pay $150 office visit, $100 lab fee and not to mention any scripts that the doctor orders all at one time? What about a family of four? Thats why cost sharing was brought about at the same time. The main way your suggestion can work is for doctors to charge less-and as we see from the huge outcry of government run insurance-people don't like to be told what to do. How can you tell a doctor to charge less so the average person can affort this. Remember, movements in politics are called PROGRESSIVE for a reason. Nothing ever rolls back. Thats like asking a healthcare professional to give up their Mercedes back to that college Buick because the American people want reform. Get it. So its back to the same square of telling people what to do. In a perfect world, sure we could all afford primary care out of pocket, but thats a real reach, I must say!

To C Diff,

As a healthcare professional I agree with what you said. The reason we are in this predicament in many ways is because of those people who drive healthcare costs up because they KNOW they won't pay and the ER's wont turn them away. But this is the kindness and integrity that our nation is built upon, which sets us apart from others. I mean where would we be if we let people die on the streets? I agree that this is an area that I would love to reform, but tell that to the millions of people who sit home and watch TV all day that. I mean what do ya do? I mean there are just too many circumstances in life that place people in the situations they are in. Nothing is black and white to the point where we can brand a person with the Scarlett Letter L for lazy and turn them away in the ER. It just aint that easy-although I wish it were because nothing gets me more than frequent fliers who dont change their behavior and expect treatment over and over again. I definitely think patient compliance should come into play at some point. I even though similar to the Deductable Rewards that car insurance companies have where you are rewarded with lower rates for not having an accident, I think patients should be rewarded in some way (lower rates) if they are showing compliance and a willingness to get better. And on the same token patients who are non compliant should have higher rates. OK let me not get started!

Costs are high because there isn't any competition. If people could shop around (think plastic surgery) for the best price, prices would fall drastically overnight. Further, when private insurance exists, cost doesn't matter. They can charge an arm and a leg and get away with it.

And as far as doctors driving Mercedes? Chances are they won't be doing that too much longer. Any major government run care program/public option will lead to a paycut for doctors. And when we move to a single payer system (as private insurance will eventually become too costly for most), an even larger paycut.

What is really necessary to bring costs down is personal responsibility in lifestyle choices, but we are living in an era of immorality and irresponsibility. Society can't continue to exist this way. From the war in Iraq and Afghanistan to the bailouts for banksters down to teen pregnancy and the parents who stuffs their child's face with a BigMac. If we don't wake up, we're going to pay the price.
