Orthopedic surgeon fined $1,500 for stapling a nurse's arm and other boorish behavior

  1. 0 The Virginia Board of Medicine committee members must not have a sense of humor. How else to explain the $1,500 fine they levied against orthopedic surgeon Benjamin Allen, MD, for stapling a surgical nurse's forearm while playing around in an OR at Culpeper (Va.) Regional Hospital?

In board documents, Dr. Allen says he only meant to tack the sleeve of the nurse's scrub jacket while testing a malfunctioning staple gun. Surgical staffers who saw the incident, however, describe Dr. Allen's actions as part of a "joke."

According to this article...IMHO, this is great step in the direction for out of control providers, especially surgeons...hope this could catch on nationally-buck the $$$ factor!!!

^ Was thinking the same thing too...however, I've heard of nurses being fired for reporting things like this, so my thoughts are: baby steps...

Sums up my thoughts completely. Obviously he wasn't mature enough to be the surgeon on duty that day. Wow.
