There are jobs, you just need to be willing to relocate. I don't feel sorry for people who complain they can't get a job if there is only one or two hospitals they are willing to work at, be flexible!

Relocation isn't an option for everyone. If you have an employed spouse, school-aged children, or aging parents who need you packing up and moving away isn't that easy.

If it's not true now, it will be before too many years pass, regardless of what the economy does in the meantime.

That may not be fair to excellent nurses who graduate with AA degrees, but it's the way the world is going in many fields. A bachelor degree is entry level.

Some folks that I graduated with - fully licensed RNs, ACLS, etc - are working as unpaid interns on the 2300-0700 med-surg shift. Nope, not being paid. In fact, they are paying registration fees at the local nursing school so that they can be "student interns" while doing their thing.

New grads paying to work the night shift.

What a lovely career choice we've made.

I concede...lol.

Amen. Sell my house in this economy? I bought a modest home with a modest mortgage but I doubt I could give it away in this market! Our school suggest hospitals that are an hour or more away from my house or about an hour or more from school.

A bachelor degree is entry level in all professions though - isn't it?? That said, no one should snub their nose at the additional education. Critical thinking skills is invaluable and this is exactly what a good BSN program provides.

When I graduate with my MS/Clinical Nurse Leader, I fully expect to work the grave-yard shift, Holiday, and Weekend rotation....we all just need to be realistic.

I am lucky enough to have found a job as a New Grad. I will confirm that I had SEVERAL classmates who had no mortgage and the ability to relocate. I can recall by name the states they applied to: all over california (literally) and would fly to interviews to no luck, nevada, arizona, washington, oregon, florida, georgia. The list goes on. There were more states they applied to, but I can't remember them all.
Here were the reasons they were not considered (Oh, and all had at least 4 years LVN experience in addition)

They were not "local" Many hospitals have so many local new grads applying they will not consider out-of state or out of county residents. One hospital was nice enough to tell a classmate, after she had spend money on a flight, hotel etc for an interview, that they were only hiring local residents.

They did not have a BSN.

They did not have experience **This seemed to be the big one** A lot of hospitals have cancelled new graduate nurse programs.

So what do you suggest to them? Many of them have applied/gotten licenses in other states, taken ACLS, PALS, etc, job hunting daily, networking (they call me often, but my hospital only hires locals). I'm usually good at advice, but I can't even think of what to tell them anymore.

My heart goes to all the nurses who can't find jobs, I know there is a lot of you right now.

I only suggested respiratory therapy because there seem to be many jobs for new grads in that field. Pharmacy too.

It's absolutely ludicrous that people on this thread suggest that new grads simply be more flexible/realistic. I have an RN license in more than one state (very $), and when I apply I use local addresses of friends and family so I look like a local. If a job says "experienced preferred" and not "experience required", I have applied for it--any shift--be it in med/surg, ICU, clinics, or LTC. And I CRAFT my cover letters to suit each job.

Also, unfortunately for me nobody has ever asked about my GPA. Scratch that, the NON-NURSING position that I'm interviewing for has asked. (If offered I will be moving across the country for that job.) Anyway, I have a good GPA because I wanted to the learn the material and for no other reason. Nurse recruiters just want to see your RN license and copious amounts of experience.

I don't know if you're thinking that is somehow unique... I know nobody from my DEMSN/CNL class who wasn't willing to work nights/weekends/holidays...

There happen to be thousands of others willing to do the same. Case in point: A local new grad program was posted for 72 hours before being so flooded with applications that they closed it to further apps. And yes, this was for a 2300-0700 med-surg job.

Don't believe the propaganda that it's really just a matter of new grads being picky. Maybe in some parts of the county, I suppose, but I guarantee you that ain't the case in these parts. There are just WAYYYY too many of us.

I, for one, really appreciate the compassion and empathy.

I get a little tired of some of the postings that imply (or overtly state) that the problem is that new grads are themselves the problem... that they (we) are immature, unrealistic, snooty, picky, lazy, in the field for the "wrong reasons," unwilling to "pay our dues," or should somehow feel guilty or selfish about wanting to find a decent-paying job for a decent organization doing real, live acute-care nursing which is, after all, the reason that most of us went to nursing school.

Thanks to you - and the others who've expressed similar views - for acknowledging the difficulties that we face and not trying to lay the blame for it at our own feet. The empathy is appreciated.
