I was in school with someone who went into a graduate program immediately after finishing the BSN program in order to avoid the workplace. This person had never worked one day in healthcare and it showed in the classroom as well as in clinical. That was years ago when we didn't have the employment situation that exists today. I suppose at some point in time this person actually found it necessary to get a job, so I would think that the higher education came in handy somehow.

Seems to be the case around here. I graduated with my BSN 2 months ago and passed my NCLEX in the minimum number of questions. I was VP of the Student Nurses Association, a good student, did volunteer work, have good interview skills, I'd like to think I'm near cream of the crop. I have been applying for every job I can find in 3 states but to no avail. I've only had one interview; the rest have all said they're holding out for someone with experience.

One downside to going back for a masters is then you've never had practical experience. In fact, the school from which I graduated doesn't allow masters students without a minimum 1 year clinical experience. Guess I'll keep searching.

The new thing now is that they want only the best grades, review your preceptorship, then 100% weight an oral exam with 5 or 6 nurse managers firing questions at you. And you compete as a new grad with experienced nurses. Cream of the crop is not always reflected in A's as many feel the pressure to cheat or selected the profession based on money only. Our public hospital just had a few openings with the parameters I just described and had 400 applicants in one weekend, then closed it. It was not advertised. No nursing shortage here. A friend of mine's sister graduated 3 years ago in her 30's, is bilingual, and has not been hired. What a waste of an education.

Hi! I'm new here, and I cant believe I'm reading this!!!! I work in a pediatric hospital in Texas and we are now doing the residency program. I hate it. They tell all the new grads they are "the creme of the crop" and now that they have all these residence nurses the experienced nurses are being told how dispensible we are by management, that they are now firing people for what ever they do that might be considered "wrong". I dont mean "wrong" as in poor nursing, but literally for not being popular with the manager.

For the most part these nurses are fine, young, all so far under 25, I have yet to see one nurse in her 30's or older. They go thru 4 rotations of 5-6 weeks each in 4 different areas and then are hired based on what they want and what management wants. If you dont like someone and they didnt pick you you get whats left over (which is what our floor got...and she isnt a good nurse, young or not, no way the creme of the crop)

Its not thier fault, but a lot of nurses are upset because its making the ADN nurses feel inadequate. We no longer hire ADN nurses. First LVN, now ADN are getting the boot first. I'm an ADN nurse with 20 yrs experience, I'm also a charge nurse but I'm sick of being told we arent important. I also heard across the board pay increases are coming next year and ADNs will not get as much as BSN (i believe adn will get 2.00, while BSN get 4.00) It wont be long till new grads make as much as i do.

BTW even after 5 months of basically orientation, we still seem to be forced to give them another 3 month orientation. If someone gave me 8 months of orientation I think I would now be queen nurse of the world. If this is a magnat thing (which i think it is) It just goes to show you how they are thinking. I also heard our paramedics are about to get the boot, which is a shame because ours is indispensible to our floor and make about half as much as a nurse and just a few more than a care partner.

We have a lot of nurses, as you all do too, who were book smart, pretty and havent got a lick of sense. Its making me crazy that they are informed on hire that they are the creme' of the crop right off the back. Most of us had to put in blood sweat and tears to get our experience and earned respect. Some of these girls come in expecting the respect they havent earned and have no problems complaining about it.

One told our floor no one wanted to work with us because we didnt know what we were doing, LOL...guess where she works now? Yup with us. Go figure. She has needed a ton of orientation too, 3 months on top of the 5 months.

I'm so glad that there is no longer a nurse shortage. And if they really truley think that is the case, then let them wait, oh...I dunno, 5 yrs and they will be shocked too find whats left. Nurses burn out, and BSN nurses dont want to be floor nurses forever. The baby boomers are at the brink of being elderly..and those nurses with a lot of experience wont be there to train the new nurses. Food for thought.

California is touting transtion programs I see..

Transition Programs
The California Department of Labor is applying for $250 million in U.S. Department of Labor funding to assist with training for nurses and other healthcare providers. Nearly $5 million would go toward nursing; some of the funding will be used for training for new grads unable to find jobs.
Meanwhile, Deloras Jones, MN, RN, executive director of the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care (CINHC), has been holding meetings across the state to address the lack-of-jobs issue.
"Up to 40 percent of 2009 new grads may not be able to find jobs in acute care and there are still some 2008 grads not working," Jones said. "We can't afford to lose them. In looking for a solution, what resonated was a new initiative supporting development of community-based transitional programs like residencies in an educational institution sponsored by regional collaboratives."
Jones said while many hospitals can't afford new grad programs and can't bring on new grads, they will need experienced nurses when the economy rights itself.
"After becoming licensed, these new graduate nurses could return to school and, through partnerships between the schools and service organizations, such as hospitals, community health or long-term care facilities, they would complete a residency program. It would expand their skill set, competency and confidence," she said.
The new nursing grads would not be employed by the partnering organization, such as a hospital, corrections department, primary care provider, hospice or public health institution so they would not get paid, Jones said, "but they would get training and experience that would let them be more employable because they could be brought in at a higher [experience] level, so their time in an orientation program would be shorter."
CINHC is currently accepting requests for proposals from regional collaboratives across the state. The Central Valley and San Diego areas are currently working on collaborative initiatives, for instance, while a $500,000 Moore Foundation grant will support programs in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Well, that's not very encouraging for us who are now in nursing school. The students in my class are NOTHING like that.

And...it can't get any worse than the financial institutions (which I left a year ago to go to nursing schoool) - the old boys club - they will try to destroy any woman who challenges them or has an ounce of common sense.

If I don't find a job, I am bouncing straight into grad school. I am sorry if some of you think that will make me an inadequate MSN nurse but you know what? I gotta follow the money. I would rather at least have an RN job while I go through. It can only improve skills, not detract.

There are programs out there that straight through BSN-MSN programs with no stopping.

Hospitals around here are now turning away their scholars. They have told some of them that they have do not have openings and they are free to pursue employment elsewhere.

I agree with the person that said hospitals are hiring these young new grads with straight As only. I am a second degree student with a 3.6 GPA and these kids snap up tech jobs left right and center while the second degree students just keep looking. We have professional experience already and yet, they take new hires that have no work experience??

Craziness.

This is incredibly depressing. I devoted 7 years of my life to get my ADN (2 yrs of pre-reqs, then 3 years on the wait list and 2 years in class) and now I find no job on the horizon. No way to bring in any income, just student loans that need to be paid. I did it this way so I could get a degree from the community college because the $30K+ for a BSN was out of our reach and I planned to continue on, using education benefits to pay for my BSN. Of course that benefit is a thing of the past now. Every job opening says "experience required" or "BSN required." Recruiters used to at least email me back a form rejection letter, but they don't even bother with that anymore. I've been trying to stay positive but sometimes I just want to crawl into bed and stay there.

I just graduated in May. And I was turned out to hospitals saying New Grads Need Not Apply. The new grad residency programs are scarce. I was actually looking forward to this November because I knew more New Grad programs would be opening up. Turns out all of them now say " December Graduates Only". So what happens to the rest of us? I was in the top of my class. I can't get a job without 3 to 5 years experience and now I can't even get a new grad job because they want the newest ones on the production line.
