To: Herring RN,

Thanks for recommended sites. I immediately signed up to receive email updates from CNA and NNOC.

About me: I am embarking on a nursing career-as a 2nd career, having worked in the Financial Industry for most of my productive life -to date. I would also like to be useful by making a meaninful contribution or participating in nursing activities that could bring about social justice, optimum patient care and better working conditions for all in the medical field. Hope to be attending nursing school in the Fall-2009, in NY.

Please, if you have even a few minutes, call the White House or send President Obama an email, or better yet, a snail mail and let him know that you appreciate his concern for nurses. Tell him how it is from your perspective, tell him what could be done to make it better, tell him why you do what you do and what keeps you from doing it the way you think nursing should be done. He wants to hear from you, or so the website says:

For those that haven't visited in awhile, activism forum has info you need to reach out to elected officials to get your message heard.

2/4/09: Nursing Activism Primer-- Legislation, Lobbying/ Contacting Elected Officials

Capital Update is ANA Government Affairs' free online newsletter on issues that impact nurses.

Take Action (NSTAT)
Who better to advocate for nursing issues than those who are on the front lines?

ANA's Nurses Strategic Action Team (N-STAT) makes it easy for you to unite with your colleagues across the nation and let lawmakers know how you feel by keeping you up to speed on key bills as they move through Congress and letting you know when your e-mails, phone calls, and letters will make the most impact

Now if he uses that bias towards improving working conditions for nurses then I will have more respect for that comment.
Why haven't you the utmost respect for his comment, now? He's been in office only 2 months, 8 days.......

He saw the conditions nurses work under in Chicago, which are horrendous; and he's put health care in the forefront of changes he expects to make. He appointed a rural nurse onto the Health and Human Services Dept., Mary Wakefield,R.N., PhD and alotted funds for our education. At this time, if he gives too much to hospitals, it will go to the health insurance companies which are self interested at best, and definitely non caring about patients' welfare. That's obvious when you look at the groups of medicaid cases they were given, who get much less coverage than contracts they have with employers, which is pretty bad.

Too many people who may not have voted for President Barack Obama, still have sour grapes rotting in their mouths. Get behind him, folks, as he's the only president who cares about ordinary people, and doesn't have the
intrerests of the rich, due to long standing association with them. He's certainly the best educated President we've had, and due to the bad experience he had with insurance companies during his mother's breast cancer, he's fired up about the situation.

I'm so proud that the nurses who he's seen, have impressed him with their capabilities and caring.

Also, obtaining a per diem position requires at least 1 year of experience as well.

this is true.
and as a newer nurse myself, i wouldn't want to take a per diem position right off the bat...maybe after a year. that's not being picky, i feel it would be selling myself short from getting a full orientation with a preceptor as a new grad, and i don't think even one year is totally enough to establish yourself and get totally comfortable with your floor/specialty... ea and every new nurse deserves at least that much.

I like your quote at the bottom of your replies.

And I agree with you by the way.
