NYC Student Nurse Killed in Senseless Shooting

This story made the local news yesterday, however today it is being reported that the victim, Marvin Gilkes was a nursing student a Queensborough Community College. Not sure if he was enrolled in the actual program or just pre-nursing but none the less a very sad story and a good man lost way too soon.

Oh god, this makes me want to cry. RIP my brother. All over the world, people with psych disorders are underdiagnosed and underserved.....the world has to get better at recognizing and serving this population. Makes me think back to the guy in Norway that killed 77 innocent young people....he was recently declared mentally incompetent.....

This is so sad. I live in Brooklyn. This hits close to home for me. My prayers are with the family.

Totally tragic. Mental illness is illness, and until those that set financial priorities understand that truth, the risk that someone will be injured by someone who is delusional will remain elevated. Closing down mental health hospitals in favor of community care has never worked well, but it keeps happening. The short term savings are far offset by the long term costs of homelessness, lost chances to regain productive lives, public disturbances, increased drug addiction, and so on. Public health also has to shoulder an increased burden, as people who can't think well enough to care for their bodies get sicker. Most mentally ill are not violent, but it only takes one. All the good this victim would have gone on to have done in his life and career is lost to his community. Nursing student, or on - his - way to nursing student, this was in a real sense our brother: Another soul called to be a healer. My heart breaks for his loved ones.

All I know is it seems every night on the local NYC area news there is a report of at least one or two killings involving guns. Not a few days ago a jealous soon to be ex-husband killed his wife, her new bf and an infant in Bayonne, NJ before shooting himself. The guy just went to the door and slammed it behind him and started shooting.
