Not sure if this has been posted on here yet. Just found this

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1231...?mod=yhoofront

It looks like they take 200 jobs in the US and rank them depending on stress level, physical demand, environment, income and employment outlook.

Moved to the Nursing News forum for more feedback.

Perhaps some of today's nursing students should read this article. Perhaps they'd get their dose of unpretty reality and be more cognizant that the job is truly difficult. It involves certainly more than "caring for people."

I know at one time Nursing was tied for the job with the most back injuries in one poll.

I noticed they have (LN) next to it, I wonder if they are referring to LPNs or if they meant it to be RN. I definitely agree that the job in general can be very physically demanding and there's lot of stress/pressure for the pay, but that will vary a lot depending on what type of setting and specialty you choose also.

I think that is sad, that this profession is on a "worst job list" ... difficult, yes but worst ... I don't think so.

Maybe that will free up some spots in nursing school for students who are prepared for those challenges I would feel awful putting thousands of dollars into school, get accepted to nursing school, and realize I couldn't handle it.

I think people should talk more about the realistic edge of nursing, not just "nurses are in demand, get a great career now!" If everyone went into nursing school with unrealistic and naive expectations, that wouldn't help the nursing shortage because those people would probably end up leaving the profession anyway and then we'd be back at square one!

I can't put too much faith in a list that says mathematicians have the best job. Or parole officer for that matter.

I would also think a dairy farmer would have it better than a garbage collector. Those poor garbage collectors sometimes test positive for radiation and never know what kind of toxic garbage they're picking up.

Just today I had a conversation with my daughter who is in nursing school. She said to me that she wasn't sure if nursing was what she wanted to do. I explained to her that she had options and that she should think about changing her major. Her response was, it is the only thing that pays and I won't have a problem getting a job. This mindset is partially responsible for the demise of nursing being a great profession. Hopefully she will make the right decision and do what is best for her.

I am planning on switching careers to go back and do nursing instead... can we all start a discussion on the "realistic expectations" for someone wanting to go into nursing?

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts...

My father worked in a hospital when I was small, and told me never to be a nurse. Overworked, understaffed, not appreciated...that is all I heard. So I didn't. I went into a different field. And I got paid squat! So sitting down with the newspaper.... I saw add after add for Nurses. So back to school I went. When I finally told my dad, he said You will love it! Go figure!
