I am so sorry for you, just because the system sucks, it does not mean that you did not try hard enough or wanted it hard enough.

I have just read the tread on why the shortages still occur. It answered a few of my questions, but why, this is 2007, they still haven't got a message that we need more nurses? I think there is more to the problem.

Re: Nursing Wages Rise, Shortage Continues (The Morning News)
The problem is not hiring international nurses or visas. The actual gut of the problem is more nursing schools! The wait to get in is up to 2 years at some schools. US has enough willing, able, smart people who want to do the job - just need the education system to fulfill the need. The cost of these schools is unbelieveable! I say the US needs to focus on the real problem - education.

Re: Nursing Wages Rise, Shortage Continues (The Morning News)
I'm working as a tech in a busy hospital while finishing my RN. In that position, I see a cross section of the staff RNs and get a good idea of what a nurse's day is like. As a rule, it's not all that attractive.
Don't get me wrong: my nurses are all great and work hard. But most are there because they need a secure job with which to support raising a family or because they have many years in toward their retirement. Many love their work and most are fun to work with, yet all are overworked and get little time with each client.
My kids are grown and I don't expect to spend 20+ years in any one position in order to qualify for retirement. I want to continue my education to the masters level at least and I want to spend a reasonable amount of time with the people I am trying to help. These goals are going to be more important to me than sign-on bonuses or vacation days. Salary is important to me, but not to the exclusion of all else, and I will turn down a high salary if it means putting up with extraordinary stress, weird schedules or assembly-line nursing.

Re: Nursing Wages Rise, Shortage Continues (The Morning News)
You're so right-RETENTION is a key issue! There are a lot of us who have an active license, but have decided not to work in patient care for various reasons.
The RN pay in central Florida is very low even though the cost of living is high Nurses new to Florida can not afford to work in patient care and buy a home, save for retirement, pay for college, etc. The hospital spends the money on the buildings, not the staff. My perception is that they care more about the concrete than the heart and soul of the hospital-the nurses and staff.

I agree with this, there is no nursing shortage, only a shortage of nurses willing to continue to work under the current conditons.

I agree! We have three hospitals very close together in my area. One seems to be business as normal. One always has "upper" staff yelling at lower staff and on down the line ("Kick the Cat Sydrome"). And another rated "TOP HOSPITAL in the STATE by PATIENTS", has floor Mngmnt. and Nurse Pract. that only get angry with those workers who do not support and nututre each other. Even then the anger comes out in one on one PRIVATE meetings, not in uproars in front of other co-workers or patients.
NURSES NEED TO BE TRAINED IN PUBLIC AND WORK RELATIONS ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE FOR A GOOD WORKING ENVIORMENT! Especialy those in charge over other nurses. By the way, the particular hospital formentioned also pushes the Docs to follow the same ideals. It must be implimented frrom the top down to truly work and have a chance a metamophasizing the entire work enviorment. But it can start with you! | | 158 members
