Nursing unions on the verge of revolution

by brian Staff

Article Snippet:

The other day, I was talking with a hospital executive, whom I warned that nurse unionization was developing a level of momentum I hadn't seen before in my 20 years in the business. His response was confident: "Unions aren't a part of our culture." I didn't argue with my friend, who certainly knows his institution better than I do. But somehow, I doubt that such cultures will last long in the face of what's coming in the nursing world.

Let's face it, ladies and gentlemen, given the responsibilities they carry, the hours they work and the amount of training their work requires, nurses aren't particularly well paid. Then, factor in the fact that--let's be honest here--nurse-to-patient ratios are more than a little thin at many hospitals, doubtless due to nursing shortages, but also cost-cutting; and consider that many hospitals give nurses virtually no chance to provide input into how things are done, treating them as robots rather than intelligent, skilled clinicians who can contribute much to a patient's plan of care, and you've got a recipe for revolution.

With the entire health care system about to collapse, it will be an interesting battle to see who all comes out on top.

I think the hospital executive whom the author of that article was talking to is in for a rude awakening very soon. Times are changing folks and health care is not immune from these changes, its time we start preparing for it.

Let's hope healthcare does not become largely unionized. All that will result in is higher healthcare costs. You're going to end up with an RN being paid $100/hr. I'm not kidding - I don't know the specific number, but the united automaker union pushed wages up to $30-something/hr for factory workers and we can all see where that got us!

I got to disagree, completely. It wasn't the autoworker making $30.00 an hour. It was the executives making 5 million a year with bonus options taking all the work over to 3rd world countries paying 300.00 a month. Who do they think will buy their cars if nobody is working?

I was just in DC for the National RN Day of Action 2009, and to lobby for safe staffing ratios (specifically, the United States National Nursing Shortage Reform and Patient Advocacy Act, introduced on May 13, 2009), the Employee Free Choice Act, and single-payer healthcare.

There were RN's present from across the country, representing the following unions: CNA/ NNOC, PA SNAP, United American Nurses, Nurse Alliance of SEIU, Massachusettes Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association. The message that myself and my fellow nurses are sending out to legislative members as well as hospitals and the citizens of this country are that we are UNITED towards a common goal-- that of safe patient care, safe nursing and support of RN's nationwide, no matter what their affiliation. Union or no, previously warring or not-- we are now ALL together. It's no longer RN vs. RN (which is what management wants-- if we argue amongst ourselves, we are ineffective in reaching our goals). It's now RN's together for change.

We are on the verge of a revolution-- actually, I would argue that the revolution is upon us. This is an exciting time!

RN's in my rural area earn $16 - 22 an hour. I was talking to the visiting ob-gyn the other day about being far from my parents and he suggested that I buy and travel via private plane.

Not to be non-plussed, I explained that there was no airport where they lived and it would be too much trouble to fly in and rent a car.

I'll strike. I am so tired of management intimidation. We recently had lay-offs and our CEO actually confronted a maintenance guy about things he allegedly said.

This guy is making how many millions of dollars a year? And I bet he will be the first to accuse "nurses high salaries", of causing high health care costs. So what if nurses make $100 a hour? Administration, management, and the CEOs are making millions and contribute NOTHING patient care and positive patient outcomes. We are worth it.

It is too bad that nursing schools do not impress upon nursing students what their worth in the workplace is, and what WE bring to the table that benefits the hospital and patients (the reason that patients are in the hospital in the first place), and what our PROFESSIONAL SERVICES are truly worth. That is the real reason that nurses are so undervalued in the workplace. JMHO and my NY $0.02.

Seems I underestimated:
General Motors Corp (GM.N) Chief Executive Rick Wagoner's salary and other compensation rose 64 percent in 2007 to about $15.7 million.
The GM compensation committee cited significant progress over the past few years in reducing the automaker's health care cost burden (like taking it away for the retirees and increasing the cost to families), increasing growth internationally (like more jobs leaving the United States.)

Seriously, they blame the guy making 60 grand a year for the downfall? How do these people sleep at night?
