Nursing graduates find tighter job market

Nursing graduates find tighter job market

New nursing school graduates are having an unusually tough time finding jobs after years of efforts to recruit people to the profession.

Experts continue to warn of a looming shortage of nurses in Iowa and across the nation. And some nursing schools are touting the profession as a safe alternative for workers who have been laid off from other careers.

But for the moment, at least, nursing jobs - like jobs in dozens of other fields - are relatively scarce.

Within a few years, the wave of retirements should resume and accelerate as baby-boom generation nurses reach their 60s, Barth said. Meanwhile, the aging of all members of that giant generation will increase the need for nurses and other health care workers, she added.

DMACC is optimistic enough about the profession that it plans to add up to 15 percent more slots to its nursing program in Ankeny, starting next spring, Barth said.

Within a few years...
And who among us can afford to wait for "a few years" for jobs to become available? And then, of course, are all the new graduates that are churned out every semester that will increase competition and render the rest of us more and more stale.

And of course, all of the "experienced" positions want nurses with experience in that particular unit type so the old advice of "get any job you can for a year or two and then you can transfer" is useless. You're quite likely to get stuck right where you started.

Yeah, sure... nursing shortage. Uh huh. What a crock...

Hang in there, music. I am not at graduation yet but I can already see how frustrating this is becoming.

I just graduated in May. Many of my classmates still have not found jobs. And even more of us did not find jobs an any areas that they were interested in.

I graduated May 18th from Nursing school and took my NCLEX June 18th. I started applying for RN New Grad positions in Feb. To date I have applied to 30 or so RN positions with only 3 interviews. I am one of the lucky ones. I know new grads who have not gotten any interviews. Yes, it is frustrating!

Does it help if you apply at less desirable places, like long term care facilities, just to get the experience in the beginning?

Instead of 'getting stale', stay in school! ADNs can get their BSN....BSNs can get their MSN. The 'few' yrs will have passed, you are better educated instead of 'stale' and you get a better paycheck.

It is all about attitude!

I'm one of the lucky ones to get a job in a specialty that I desire... but i got it over an hour away... Looks like i'll be commuting the most dangerous stretch of I-35 in the country.

I have continued my education as well. I'm working on my EMT-Intermediate after that planning working on getting the CCRN. Then I'll start working on my EMT-Paramedic...CCP...Then I'll start trying to float to the ER...CEN...Somewhere in there i'll start trying to fly!

I've got a plan... the wheels are turning... the ball is rolling!

Thanks for the input! I have applied to everything to flu shot clinics to home care. I love nursing and any area I am hired in I will enjoy. As for the BSN, it is my plan eventually, but right now generating an income is a must. Hoping something will surface soon.

No, it's all about money... and there's very little left after getting this far. No job = no money for more schooling
