It isn't just nursing assistants and or other employees abusing patients either; there is a growing problem of male patients unable to keep their hands and or tackle to themselves.
With more and more elderly persons choosing home care, nursing homes have looked to other sources for revenue/to fill beds and one nice steady source has been the housing of psyc patients. Medicare has loose restrictions on the matter and it pretty much comes down to rules stating that no more than one-third of the total patient census can be made up of psyc patients.
Elderly and or disabled persons in nursing homes have been physically and sexually abused by psyc patients, up to and including some that have been beaten nearly to a pulp. Many homes claim they separate psyc patients from the others, but not all and not always and aside from locked wards it can be rarely foolproof.
Many elderly residents of nursing homes with psyc patients tell of being totally in fear.
The most saddest thing to my mind is an elderly or frail person stuck alone with little or no caring family paying frequent and routine visits in a nursing home. And I am here to tell you if one has to scrub toilets in public restrooms or whore myself on the street, NO member of my family is ever going into a "home" if I can help it.
Ugggh! We have one dementia/heavy care unit and it seems like no thought is given to room assignments! They have a couple teeny tiny, extremely anxious little ladies in with women who scream and hit the workers. It scares the bejesus out of them. Not to mention it's no picnic for us to be kicked, punched, slapped, bitten, spit on, etc.
Then there is this one guy who is on as many different alarms as possible, but for some reason he has a baby monitor in his room as well and we're required to carry one end of it so we can hear everything that goes on in his room. Well, this guy has verbal outbursts where he swears like a drunken sailor. So I'm trying to take little old ladies to the bathroom and suddenly a very impolite way of saying, "Homosexual performing fellatio!!!" will emanate from my pocket. It's horrible.
