Nurses strike at Lourdes Medical Center

  1. 0 WILLINGBORO, N.J. -- Hundreds of nurses went on strike Monday at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County after contract talks stalled over the weekend, but the hospital remained open and officials said all services were continuing on a normal basis.

Picket lines were set up outside the hospital shortly after the 7 a.m. strike deadline passed. And while both sides expressed hope that a settlement would soon be reached, talks held with mediators on Friday failed and no new negotiating sessions were scheduled.

    Gist of the article:

"Nurses said the main point of contention was work rules, not salary or benefits.

Nurses on the picket line said cuts to the nursing staff and other hospital jobs are making it harder to care for patients.... a negotiator for the nurses' union said the hospital has laid off or reduced the hours of 68 nurses since last October."

Does anyone know why the nurses have been laid off or had their hours reduced. Is their hospital census low??????

Have heard that, generally, census has been falling nationwide. Don't think that is news.
