by Not_A_Hat_Person Jul 22, '11Apparently, someone at a UK hospital deliberately added insulin to a batch of saline. The prime suspect is a nurse.
Detectives have arrested a 26-year-old nurse on suspicion of murder over the deaths of three hospital patients given insulin-contaminated saline solution, Greater Manchester Police said.
The woman worked at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where police were alerted last week to a batch of saline believed to have been deliberately tampered with.
The unexplained deaths of Tracey Arden, 44, 71-year-old Arnold Lancaster, and George Keep, 84, are being linked to the contamination, while a fourth patient, a man in his 40s, remains critically ill.

- Jul 22, '11 by xoemmylouoxThat is very scary. It's no wonder why some people question our every action.
- Jul 22, '11 by palemoonNot only is it evil, it seems so pointless. If she wanted to kill someone in particular, she's certainly in a position to do it. But just contaminating a batch of saline? She'll kill people at random, as she already has. Odds are, she wasn't even present when they died, and didn't give them the contaminated saline herself. So you can throw out the possibility of reveling in watching them die.
It's...disturbing on a whole new level. Unfathomable.Orange Tree and CNA1991 like this. - Jul 22, '11 by eriksolnTwo things came to mind for me here:
1. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. Healthcare facilities have been pushing and lobbying to make it so they can staff themselves like a fast food restaurant (everyone makes min. wage except management, very few full time workers with benefits etc). As they creep closer and closer to their goal, the quality of workers that now staff healthcare delivery facilities is reflecting their work. Lower class jobs attract lower class people.............PERIOD, no way to dance/micromanage your way around it.
I can see someone with a retail or fast food background going to nursing school, getting by and beginning their career as an RN. When the reality of what they've gotten themselves into strikes them..............some will look for ways to thumb their noses at the public and the powers that be. For most of us with a more human moral compass, this simply means a slight slip in our compassion or not helping out with coming in or w/e. But, as we continue to lower the bar on who we allow to staff the facilities, we end up having those who take a more evil approach to showing their discontent.
You get what you pay for.
2. While this act by this nurse, if she did it, is truly evil, it is not unique nor as uncommon as we'd like to believe. Other departments and other professions (healthcare related and non alike) do things every bit as wicked. Landlords, car mechanics, lawyers, politicians, businesses, food service, the police..........all have their "dark side". Unfortunately, when the dark side of nursing butts it's head into reality, for some reason, its much bigger news.
So, what we have is this.........double standard. When something goes wrong, the fact that nurses "save lives" and are "responsible for more than just stocking the produce, they deal with people" comes to the front and center of the stage. We get the "Nurses are supposed to be compassionate and truly care about what they do" stuff thrown at us. But, when it comes time to make the budget and put nurses in a position to deliver the care people want, its right back to.............well, refer to #1.
Again, you get what you pay for. - Jul 22, '11 by nerdtonurse?I was thinking about this, and how easy it would be for someone to think they could drop a patient's sugar so they could run in with D50 and be supernurse, or get patients transferred to ICU so they didn't have so many. I've seen some scary, scary people who were nurses ... some mean and hateful, some just so sure they were wonderful that they didn't realize how dangerous they were. I could see an idiot thinking if they just put some insulin into the bag then they wouldn't have to come in and do coverage....
It would be nice if they truly did a "jury of your peers" -- and she had to face 12 nurses in the jury box. - Jul 22, '11 by MaryAnn_RNThe nurse has now been charged http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...ester-14256332

IMHO there needs to be more research done regarding persons whose personality and or mental status is such that they cannot move a muscle without posting about it to FB or other social media/blogging or what have you. - Jul 22, '11 by eriksolnQuote from DoGoodThenGoOr on AllnursesYet another Facebook "addict" healthcare worker.

Hmmmm, lets see. I got up in the morning, a little later than usual. Showered and fed the kittens. After some time on AN, I cleaned the house up a bit and finished a load of laundry. I then went and did some errands and had Chinese buffet for lunch. Came back home, played Wii for a little while and got back on here. Now, just killing some time before I go into work to do some OT, they need night shift help and I have the weekend off to recover from working so I took it.
Updates from the weekend pending, depending on my sobriety level and ability to post.
I have to admit though, I had to look at your link. I was like "I wonder if she looks like anyone I know?". Maybe its just me, but she looks like an idiot. First thing that came to mind when I saw her was "If I was at the bar and she rolled in, I'd roll on out."lindarn and tele jelly like this. - Jul 22, '11 by C_perugiaeQuote from eriksolnYeah, because "lower-class" people with a past in retail or fast food couldn't possibly be trained as nurses. I, for instance, am Evil Pet Store Girl, who is willing to work for next to nothing just to get into the healthcare field! Two things came to mind for me here:

You may think I'm invading your profession because I want to make tons of money, or just because the horrible hospitals are finally stooping low enough to hire scum like me. What I think is that I'm fascinated by human physiology and want to use my God-given smarts to work in a profession where my talents can benefit others. That minimum wage job on which I lived hand-to-mouth for eight years got me through school, and now I can unleash my compassion and critical thinking abilities on the world!
Instead of passing judgment on everyone's background or looks, we should recognize this as a case of a (likely) very ill person who seems to have found some benefit in endangering the lives of others. I don't understand how income or past work experience has ANYTHING to do with this case.
