new orleans hospitals go online to coordinate their efforts
since october, new orleans hospitals have been using a web to improve coordination among their crowded emergency rooms. the hospitals immediately posted online how many beds they had available, and nursing homes relayed that they could absorb patients if the hospitals were overwhelmed.

This is good. Good for routine fluctuations in census and in the event of a bigger disaster.
I think all communities need to share information and be ready to share supplies when the next disaster occurs.

That is fine until you get a natural or unnatural event that cuts power and communication of all kind.

Are these hospitals under the same ownership or are all hospitals no matter who owns them linked?

[s] the state department of health and hospitals joined the site -- called emsystem -- to aid communication during a hurricane, flu outbreak or other public health crisis. while it is available to hospitals around the state, health care providers in the new orleans area are the only ones using it on a daily basis to juggle patients among besieged emergency rooms.[/s]

system availalbe to most hospitals in state louisiana, just not those affilated together.

all the new orleans hospitals are using system even those that normally compete against each other due to er gridlock. appears to be working well for them.
