My daughter's school district will have a flu clinic in the next couple of weeks where they're suppose to give the kids the H1N1 shot. i'm hoping a nurse will be giving the injections to the kids if not i'm gonna ask if i can cuz i will be there. they may or may not let me do it but i can show that i'm a nursing student capable of giving flu shots. we've already done those a few weeks ago. no way will i let anyone other than a dr. or nurse give my baby a shot.

So, an EMT with a lot of experience, or an MA that is certified, with experience, is NOT acceptable to you, but yourself, as an PN STUDENT, with very little experience is acceptable? That sounds rather ridiculous to me. I don't think that they would take the liability to allow a nursing student that they know nothing about, that has NO credentials, give shots to anyone even their own child. They are not nursing instructors that are required to take the liability for their students under their own license. I don't think you really know as much about EMT's, or a certified MA's credentials as you seem to believe you do.

If your baby went into anaphylaxis from a bee sting and you called 911- I sure hope you would not question that paramedic who holds the syringe full of epi. In the few seconds it could take to argue your baby could die. The flu clinics will be crazy enough. Do yourself and everyone else a favor- let whoever is there give the shot. I taught a 9 year old to give his mom shots once when there was no other caregiver and she could not do it. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO DO, PEOPLE. I taught skills lab in a nursing program for a while too, and all you need to know is the angle and the landmarks. RELAX and get the shots!

the pharmacist at walgreens gave my boyfriend his seasonsal flu shot. we both are nurses and had no complaints about his technique at all. i believe that someone with a doctorate in pharmacy has more than adequate education in anatomy and physiology to be trained to give an IM injection.

It is still so funny to hear the comments against MA's giving injections- I have been teaching a 7 year old to give his own insulin with no problems. It is hardly brain surgery, but you'd think it was by some of the comments on this board, LOL. There will always be people that are good at giving injections, and some not so much-no matter what their degree/certification/credentials. Also, calling upon experienced nurses- when was the last time you saw a physician give a vaccination? I am unsure that I ever have, and I have been an RN for 33 years!

my pulmonologist always gives me the PPD and reads them himself. he said he does not trust anyone else to do it. we also have a neurologist at my hospital who is awesome at starting IV's. i have occasionally seen doctors give an IM haldol or the likes to a psych pt who is out of control, but other than that, no, it's a rare occurance.

maybe pediatricians give their own injections? peds is not my speciality so i have no idea.

A Dr. gave my son the chickenpox vaccine. She was really mean about it though, no patience at all for a frightened kid. We never went back to her. Nurses are much more patient.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, there are some procedures that are simply too important to trust to doctors.

Considering his insistance upon keeping a cigar in his mouth at all times, it's consistent that he disregarded doctors' advice.
