It's scary. This is a small community hospital. What's also troubling is it took this long for the story to break. It's only going to get worse. I work in Long Term Care and have been punched, threatened with violence from families, grabbed by the arm, and someone tried to strangle me...and I'm management. I feel for the nurses' aides. But, as long as psychotic people are in the general population of the hospital or nursing home, things like this will happen.

I feel sorry for the person who last laid hands on the man before he stopped breathing. They will try to pin some sort of manslaughter charge on him when he was actually trying to prevent injury to other people. He probably feels terrible.

The problem is right there in black and white. "Hospital security put the man in a choke hold" . SHould have never happened unless the like in the previous case he was in the midst of committing a homicidal act. Even then its a hospital there should be plenty of staff to appropriately restrain him.

The latest from that hospital is they DIDN'T use a choke hold to restrain him. He said she said...call your lawyers.

Your right they should have enought security to handle the problem and not only enought but capable, strong in shape security that are well trained and encouraged to do a take down when nessesary.

I have worked in English speaking ER's as well as Ghetto ER's. The ritzy ERs got tylenol OD's, hardly ever saw and crystal nor crack nor Heroin, very little alchoholism. The Ghetto/inner city hospital very heavy drug overdoses, lottsa violent patients.

The Ritzy hospitals had weak old security that looked very frail and elderly and anemic. They never put hands on and were advised not to!!!

The Ghetto hoppitals had buff security instructed to protect the staff and iff someone was causing to much trouble givem the bums rush and escort them off the property!

Different views on security dependent on the Hospital Administration and Patien Demographics. Also In Ghetto ER's no body ever wrote you up they just spit at, cursed, bit, kicked and punnched you. In the Clean Ritzy ED's you never got attacked but patients knew hot to write very nasty letters to administration.

As a Paramedic I have seen violent patients kicked out the door of an ambulance, struck in the head with a bat. Working outside of the Hospital mileau it's you or the attacker. One will win and one will not!

I worked the Bowery in NYC as and EMT and Medic for years never got hit once. I knew when to back off, when and how to defuse agitated people and when to run.

But then again I have done take downs with wired crack/crystal what ever flying high volatile madmen who took 4 or 5 cops plus little me 6' 224lbs and 3 other big guys to get him to the ground. He didn't feel pain, didn't feel the cop dislocate his anle with his baton. The only thing that would stop this druggy was over 1,000lbs of Graveyard shift cops and Nurses.

I was on a Medic call once in South Ferry Manhattan for a crazy guy. The cops had him handcuffed and he ws screaming, very delusional and agressive. He was fighting the cuffs and trying to get away. they dragged him to his knees and the Sargent told them hold his **&^%% mouth open! After which he maced the crap out of the pt's throat and he really went ballistic!

Our security guys could not deal with this kind of thing. They are not allowed to touch anyone. I am not sure why they are there. If someone was getting stabbed or being beaten I don't know that they would do anything. They are not allowed to touch a patient. We used to have off duty police officers in the hospital. But to save money they got rid of them. So I carry my gun. We are a small hospital and at night people get in that place and you have no idea what mood they are in. I am just waiting for the day when some stupid jerk comes off the elevator with a weapon requesting that we give him our drugs.

I don't trust NO BODY. No one is going to jump me on the way to my car at night if I can help it.
