Man shoots wife in the ICU
Register Today!- by Asystole RN Aug 4, '12Not to make light of the situation but that ICU nurse puts to shame all the "I had the worst day" threads. I can not imagine.AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man is accused of shooting his wife at Akron General Medical Center, according to hospital spokesman Jim Gosky.
The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday. The hospital says the woman is an intensive care unit patient and currently in critical condition. It is unknown if her condition was listed as critical prior to the domestic shooting.

A few years back we had a man come into a local nursing home and kill his wife and then himself. Very sad
- Aug 5, '12 by Ruby Veei feel for the staff of that icu. i've been through a couple of episodes where threats were escalated to the point of guns being drawn, and though no one was killed, it leaves it's mark on the staff, the patients, and the visitors. i hope that staff are getting some help in working through their feelings.herring_RN likes this.

- Aug 5, '12 by tokebiWow... I once had a stabbing victim stagger into our classroom and bleed all over the floor when I was an undergrad, which left me shaken up pretty badly for a while. I can't even imagine a shooting in a hospital.
I hope there's no nutcase suggesting it could've been averted if nurses were carrying.Piglet08 and herring_RN like this. - Aug 5, '12 by xoemmylouoxQuote from tokebiYeah no kidding. I have always thought that the "gun free zone" was an absurdly naive idea. To expect criminals (who by definition do not follow the law) to obey a small sign on the door is absurd. The only people who are going to be dissarmed are those who are willing to obey the law in the first place. If someone wants to come in and shoot someone then they are going to come in and shoot someone.
I personally do not carry a firearm into the hospital but I do know people who do, and I do not begrudge them for it. - Aug 6, '12 by tokebiI completely agree "gun free zone" idea is absurd. But I also think the culture of encouraging civilians to carry guns is just as absurd. I hope to live in a society where it is not so common for civilians have guns. I grew up in a country where most people never ever see or touch guns except in military, and the worst violent crimes you hear would be some serial killer with knives. Sometimes it just boggles my mind why guns are so common in US.Christy1019 likes this.

Now I am torn, I wholeheartedly agree with the right to die in dignity but what a way to do it.
