VIENNA - A paralyzed Austrian man was eaten to death by maggots in his bed while his partner slept beside him, police said Wednesday.

The 61-year-old retiree died in an ambulance on his way to hospital in Vienna on Tuesday with the maggots having partly devoured his back.

That is my daughter's biggest fear...maggots eating at her!
OK, my question is how could you not HEAR the maggots? They make that wiggling, squishy noise.
Also, necrotic tissue, even though the maggots were eating it, had to have had some kind of odor, I'm thinking? How could the partner not smell something?
This is so sad and very terrible.

agreed...how long would it take for maggots to eat a human to his death?
and how long could this go unnoticed??

    something is tremendously amiss, here.
    my God.

You've got to work at it to gross me out, but sleeping with a maggotty boyfriend? EWWW! *shudder* I've had a couple of patients with maggots in their diabetic ulcers, and that white crawling mass was over the top. I can't make meatloaf anymore because that sound it makes when you're squishing the crackers and onions and bell pepper and raw ground beef together sounds exactly like maggots at work, and makes me gag.

If you've ever had a patient with necrotic foot or wet gangrene, you know the smell had to be horrible. And he's snuggling up with the guy? Psych eval, bed 1!

I just do not see how this could be over looked....the smell...the blatantly obvious appearance of maggots...did his partner not sleep in the same bed? Surly he had not just laid in bed for days lying in his urine and feces or she would have noticed it then...surely if he was paralyzed he would have a home health worker. I am not sure if I believe this. But if it is true, his partner should be charged.

They only devour dead tissue. If his back was in that bad shape their presence probably kept the odor down. There had to be much more to the story than this. More sensational press in action.

OH BARF!!!! How can you be in the same bed with this man??? I don't care if he wanted to be washed or not... you want me in bed with you, your washing that nasty rear end! How gross! How can you not hear that squishy noise at night? The odor! OMGoodness! I agree with the others who said that there has got to be more to this. I am sure there is beings' the man was 61 and his "partner" was 34. I know the man suffered a stroke, but I would think that you would feel something like that! Hello?!?!?!?! The partner should be charged with neglect. Gross!
