Almost four years ago my uncle shot himself to death at a hospital. The police found a suicide note in his car. I don't know what it said, except that he wanted to be "free". (He was being treated for clinical depression, but was not fully cooperative in taking his meds.)

I work in a small hospital in California. Yesterday we had a man shoot and kill himself, his wife and his dog a few hundred feet from our ER doors. We really don't know why he did it, although there is speculation that he and his wife planned this out and picked the spot ahead of time.

Haven't had any suicides in the ER, however, have had alot of DOA's found outside the ER driveway, praking lot, etc.

Thanks for the info. It gets scarier and scarier to work in the ER now days. I worked in an ER several years ago where a man shot himself just outside the ambulance bay doors. We had a code entry door and he had been seen wandering around outside the door prior to the shooting. He left a note saying he did it at the hosptal so he could be an organ donor. Sad and scary.

Incidents like this are so sad, scary, and sort of sinister. Yes, sinister because every time the door opens for a few days everyone is more on edge, more alert to every patient who is just a "little" different looking, and more afraid this will spark other into action.
Like other posters mentioned, I hope the staff and even people in the waiting areas get counseling and debriefing services asap.

Thank you, LA and bluesky. :icon_hug: My dad and his brothers have been visiting their mom since this happened, to give her support. She also has friends, so she's not entirely alone.

Just this last summer I had a similar incident. I was leaving late aroound 0230 am an had a person shoot themselves 2 parking spaces over from me out in the garage. Nobody knew my little pregnant self could move that fast getting inside for help. I am ever so aware of my surroundings whenever I go in the garage now.

I was a SAHM, and loved it. I can't change my user status anymore, but I am right there with you. Wish I could do that again. Best ten months of my life.

When I was a paramedic I had to go to a lot of suicides. The one that will haunt me forever was a young girl who I had befriended. She used to come and visit me at my ex's home when I had horses. She cleaned stalls for me, brushed horses, worked with the baby horses. She was a natural with them and I let her ride the good horses, even my stallion occasionally. I had filed for divorce and didnt have the horses anymore. She was always a dark person but maybe I could have helped her a bit more. I was the one to pronounce her dead, that will never leave my memory.

There are many crimes committed in emergency rooms. I can think of several in my area, one involved the shooting of a social worker.
