I guess I am confused by this statement. Who is being discourteous here, the father of the baby, the nurse, or those of us on AllNurses who are outraged with his behavior?
Throughout my career, I have tried to be nonjudgmental regarding the recipients of my nursing care. I learned early on to check my prejudices or preconceived notions at the door and deliver the best care possible, even if my patient was someone with whom I would never ever want to have an encounter outside a health care facility. I also learned to be courteous and respectful to everyone, regardless of social status, gender, age, etc.
However, this man crossed the line by sexually assaulting a nurse. His behaviors are outrageous and I am glad the nurse pressed charges and that he was arrested. As nonjudgmental and courteous as I am, I would have at least thought of decking him had he done that to me.
I get the feeling most other posters are pretty disgusted with his behavior, hence the harsh judgment. I'm with them. His actions were inexcusable, inappropriate and demeaning, not only to the nurse but also to the woman who was bearing his child.
ETA: Now if this guy was the patient, the nurse would still be within her rights to make a complaint and press charges. But however outrageous and inappropriate the man's behavior would be, he would still have the right to good nursing care and not be referred to as a swine. Yeah, I'd have to bite my tongue if I was his nurse but I'd still do my best.
