In Kenya, patients held hostage to medical bills

by OldMareLPN Premium Member

By Edmund Sanders, Los Angeles Times

Regina Wamza, too poor to pay a $60 delivery fee after having her baby, was held by a Nairobi hospital for four months in miserable conditions, sharing a small room with three other new mothers. She managed to escape.

Wow, that story was shocking. It's crazy to think how good we really have it.

I honestly didn't think you meant literally "hostage," how wrong I was....

The going-ons in that article are disgusting.

Jeez, no wonder why one of the girls I work with declines to discuss why she came to the states to be a nurse, and is trying so hard to get her family out of Kenya. I can't even fathom what it must be like to live in such a place.

A while back on the Filipino board, one nurse who still lives there made a reference to paying and non-paying wards. Of course, the paying patients received much better care.

And we complain about our present health care system.

I'm currently reading a wonderful book called "The Lassa Ward", about a medical student who went to Sierra Leone to do research for his master's thesis. He had no idea what he was getting into, believe me.

We already have a split system ... publically funded vs privately funded hospitals.

This article had me in tears! Unbelievable that anyone seeking medical care can be treated like a prisoner. No wonder they avoid hospitals at all costs, and go uneducated about taking care of themselves, and have high HIV/AIDs epidemic.
