Karmic Justice for Winkler County Nurse Doctor

  1. 17
I'm sure most of you remember the Winkler County Nurse fiasco. Well, it appears that the doctor involved in the case was arrested and charged with criminal retaliation and "misuse of official information," both felonies. The latter charge was the same one the nurses were charged with after reporting him to the Texas Medical Board.

Seems to me that the sheriff should also face charges for conducting a bogus investigation.

    Kudos to these nurses!

What scares me is that he is still licensed and practicing. The TX BOM has not issued an emergency injunction suspending his license, despite many, many complaints about substandard care and a prior conviction by the Tx BOM.

What sickens me is that the Winkler County Hospital fired these 2 nurses that whistle blew the substandard care this MD was providing. Another example of nurses being expendable, and their employer not backing them.

That's some backcountry, Dukes of Hazzard stuff right there. There were mumblings of backcountry politics on prior threads; however, this is at the level of Boss Hogg and Sheriff Rosco...

Not necessarily. I've seen a case of accusations of gross misconduct, malpractice and sexual assault by a surgeon end very badly for those who reported him, and this was in an urban, affluent county.

It is often the case that the locally powerful, in any locality, close ranks and stick together.

The reason doctors get away with malpractice is because they can afford dirty lawyers who will sue the medical board any time they get sanctioned. As a result, the medical boards only move against doctors if the evidence is absolutely overwhelming, and usually "simple" medical malpractice doesnt cut it. You've got to rape patients or kill them directly. There needs to be a change in law that gives state medical boards more protection from lawyers and you will start to see them hammer down more of these idiot docs. Texas is a big state -- I seriously doubt that the people running the medical board have any idea who this "cowboy" in rural Texas is or what he is up to.

    Justice? I don't think so.

Where are the Congressmen jumping all over this with vows to enact new legislation in order to prevent this from ever happening again? Something is broken....and broken it remains.

So no one cares that the sheriff seized information for his buddy?

He had to have made something up to obtain the letter, unless he just got it without a warrant which is even worse.

Glad to hear the doctor's in hot water, but I can't believe he still has a license at the moment. Good heavens! And what's the deal with the sheriff? The article didn't mention any negative consequences for him. Does anyone know if he's facing any sort of investigation?

Apparently so - last thing I heard was that he expected to be the next one to be arrested - the news stated that the sheriff AND the county attorney as well as the District attorney are under investigation. The CEO has resigned or been fired, not sure which but the idiot doc is still employed there!

Thanks for the update! Any bets on the size of the former CEO's golden parachute?
