7Feb 5, '12 by nursel56 GuideI think there are many new grads who are as diligent as you are in strategizing their goals to fit with whatever other responsibilities and people/things require their attention. They got caught up in an unprecedented perfect storm of the supply of new grads finally keeping up with demand, the trend toward hiring techs to do many things tradiitionally associated with nursing, the economy tanking, and schools clinging to the rosy job scenarios for their own interests aka "The Big Lie".
Judging by the many posts I've read on this subject, I can say the vast majority do not expect anything to be handed to them. The issue is so bad, allnurses added a few new forums specifically geared toward helping people get hired in an extremely tough job market. There you can read some of the things people are going through, find out if more jobs are finally opening up, and share your advice.
You have a great understanding of the concept of networking, it's surprisng how many people really don't. Best wishes as you continue in nursing school!

Personally I believe it was all made up to cause this surplus so hospitals could start cutting benefits and wages. which is exactly what has happened.

I have a BS degree from a major university and it took me ~2 years to land a job as a tech where, supposedly, the only requirement is a high school diploma! I ran into the "post job offers, but never fill them" problem more times than I could count. I knew I wanted a job in a hospital so I sent application after application trying to get my foot in the door. I'm 1/2 way through my nursing program and I feel very fortunate to have found this website so early in my nursing path because I knew early on about the "nursing need" lie. I feel more prepared for life after graduation than most of my peers.
So, just a big thank you! For being here and getting the word out about the overflow of new nurses, hopefully I am a better new hire candidate because of you!

My thought parallel yours...I am hopefully about to enter a nursing program come summer '12 and wonder what type of newly graduated nurse can't find a job. Is it the family member who spouse has a settled job and they can't move around so which limits their job opportunities? I'm wondering what the market would look like for people who are extremely flexible and willing to work wherever...
