Re: Ind. doctor among 1st to get swine flu vaccination
Is it just me, or is this getting ridiculous.
He took his flu mist in front of cameras, please....
At least this swine flu craziness takes the focus of the economy and the war.

Re: Ind. doctor among 1st to get swine flu vaccination
Yeah it is ridiculous however I suspect the whole point was to reassure the public that the vaccine is safe. As we all know, a large proportion of the public and even health care workers have misconceptions and fears regarding the H1N1 vaccine and it's safety. "I worry that those who need the vaccine the most (pregnant women, children, those with high risk conditions, and health care workers) will be slow to accept and ask for the vaccine. This may be for a variety of reasons, including fear of a “new rushed” shot (it’s similar to the standard flu shot with the new virus swapped in), fear of getting the flu from the vaccine (that can’t happen with the shot; unlike the nasal spray for healthy people between 2 and 49, the shot contains an inactive virus), a habit of getting flu vaccines (the baseline immunization rate in a typical year for some high risk groups is pretty low — 8 percent for pregnant women, less than 30 percent for children with asthma, less than 50 percent for health care workers). The rate of flu vaccination is much better for the elderly, but that’s not who we are targeting with the swine flu vaccine."

"But in a survey conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, we found reasons to worry about how many people would get the vaccine: only 40 percent of adults and 51 percent of parents said they were absolutely certain they would get the vaccine for themselves or their children." http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.c...-on-swine-flu/ | | No. 3 |

Because it is the only vaccine out right now and pregnant women, people over 50 and certain other groups can't take the vaccine in this form. The shots will arrive later this month.
While the virus is live, it is attenuated i.e. weakened.

Re: Ind. doctor among 1st to get swine flu vaccination
i read that with a live virus , you can actually shed the virus. i know this was said to be true of live polio virus-- which could be shed on the way out of recipient's stool. therefore, they were warning to be careful of shed product, esp. around immunocompromised. so just curious... would the live flu mist have any repurcussions on an RN who took it and could she be shedding it somehow?
...always thinking/ food for thought....

I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the first, original "swine flu scare" which took place around 1975 or 1976. I was going to college for the first time back then. The biggest thing I remember about it was that it was a big bust. More people died from the vaccinations than the supposed disease itself. Having said that, yes I will probably get the H1N1 shot just to be safe and keep others safe, but at the same time I'm not going to lose any sleep over it..... Been there, done that.....

Re: Ind. doctor among 1st to get swine flu vaccination
Was he one of those 150 "in the bag" docs who showed up at Obama's White House photo op?
When they showed up in business attire, White House aids scrambled to get 150 nice white lab coats to dress them up.
First, Fake Doctors, now White Lab Coats so we get the visual sell.
And, I'm still not buying!
Yeah! It's getting mighty ridiculous. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/nationa...EeRQbxCC0TNZHN | | 254 members
