We, US nurses, simply want to be given the opportunity/chance to prove ourselves before being pushed aside for a foreign nurse.
Honey, you don't know me and you don't know anything about me. I don't consider myself better personally than anyone - I'm sure I'm worse than a lot. Professionally? Sorry if it offends you, but I AM better than a new grad. An expert is better than a novice, professionally. I do not insult your skills, I'm sure you're wonderful.. however you cannot put an old head on young shoulders, and you can't put an experienced head on an inexperienced nurse. Please do not consider that a personal insult - it's not.
For the record, I totally agree that importation of foreign nurses should NOT be accomplished at the expense of American nurses, particularly at this time. However, whoever said "we don't need you", I was headhunted here before the recession. Should I leave now? You don't want my taxes? Or the "out of state" fees I pay to my university?Believe me, my mum is terminally ill at home - if I didn't currently have a work contract, I'd be gone.

Re: Immigration: More Foreign Nurses Needed?
Obviously if there wasn't a need for "imported nurses" there would not be any "imported nurses" allowed to work in the US....I think all things have a purpose in our economy... Someone said it earlier---supply and demand. We demand them so other countries supply them. Its how this country was founded....WE WERE ALL FOREIGNERS AT ONE TIME! Unless ur a full blooded native american
The system is flawed. Obama should spend some of this economic stimulus money setting up grants for hospitals to create "new grad intern programs." All hospitals applying for this grant would recieve enuf money to support new grads in there training. They would sign on to work at a hospital for 1-2 years under this grant then when they were ready to fly they would have a couple years of experience to burst out into the world. EXPERIENCED in whatever unit they were trained. That way the hospital would not be burndened with the expense, the new grad gets experience, and holes can be filled where they need to be filled...... and the world would be a happier place.
I live in Missouri and we are always short! I work overtime galore, bust my rear, work short, break my back...blah blah blah. There are nurses in big city areas that can't find jobs but they are not willing to move and take the 25,000/year paycut to live in small-town USA. I say, bring on the out of country nurses or bring the big-city nurses here to no-mans land.

Re: Immigration: More Foreign Nurses Needed?
Ghilbert, since you are covered by all the working protections of any worker, there is a law called the Family Leave Act, you are allowed 3 months time off( unpaided after your vacation time) to care for your mother. You will need a note from her health care provider some paper work and you will be all set. Sorry to hear about your Mother.
To C_Beshore, any job is better than no job, I live in the northeast, why doesn't you area recruit at job fairs ? I am guessing that other nurses don't know there are jobs available.

Re: Immigration: More Foreign Nurses Needed?
I think, like most small, tiny, communities, we are edged out by the big dogs. Where I live and all the tiny little towns around here we are short because all the "job fairs" happen in big towns or cities. We are smack inbetween Kansas City and Joplin. Nurses go North or South. We can't compete with wages or benefits. Whats the use in going to a job fair if Kansas University Medical Center is at the next table? What would we say: "We can give you longer hours, short staff, $5.00/hr less, and minimal benefits" WHO WOULD TAKE THAT?

I have seen Canadian Provinces market in my metro area, they come frequently so they must get a response. It is not all about money, it is about lifestyle, I would imagine were you are it is a friendly and small town feeling. How do you think the foreign nurses know to apply to you hospitals, it is due to the fact they are recruited. As for a job fair, I am not speaking about a Job Fair in your home state but states where there is a glut of nurses. I know that would cost money, but how about a mass email to the schools of nursing - most have a job board.

I don't see your point, I didn't see anyone on this post contesting where foreign nurses weren't legal or pay taxes. It doesn't make sense to me as a citizen to pay an American unemployment insurance and then hire foreign nurses. It does seem right when American are loosing their homes to hire a foreign nurse. It does n't make sense when a graduate is saddle with loans to deny them a job and then hire a foreign nurse.
I thought we were keeping to the merits of the question, does American need more foreign nurses or should we hire Americans ? PS You still haven't told me where all these open jobs are!
Can anyone tell me exactly what percentage of nurses (including new grads) are unemployed because there are no jobs opened to them? Last time I look in the classified add it is littered with nursing positions mostly in ECF. May be the reason why positions are not being filled are because #1 Job description is not compatible with the applicant. #2 shift recruirement is not conducive to applicant's schedule. #3 applicants prior history. #4 full time vs part time. #5 mandatory weekend and holiday shifts, etc .. And pls whatever is happening in your facility is not always true for another. Where I work theres' 100% retention of new grads plus incentives if they choose to. We have a progran called Student Nurse Externship. It gives nusrsing student already in the program to practices nursing duties under supervision of a reg staff RN. Onces they finished nursing school they have a choice wether to stay in the facility or not. even with this program our facility still under staff.

Re: Immigration: More Foreign Nurses Needed?
Alex in response to your question:
A. I think if volumes of people did apply our hospital would be overwhelmed.
B. I just don't think we've thought that globally yet
C. We have an LPN program and 2 RN programs within 19 miles and we do grab those nurses. The problem is they don't last long. We do not have CNA's most of the time and its HARD work. They grab the experience then move on.
Our community is WONDERFUL! around 8,000 ppl, I have a wonderful 3 bedroom house with a fenced backyard, awesome neighborhood, for $550/month. Never lock my doors on my car or house!! I walk 1 block to work. You can get your yard mowed for $15, your kids won't get shot at school, we have 4 nursing homes, 2 psych facilities, 1 hospital, multiple community nursing opportunities.....U SHOULD MOVE. lol

Re: Immigration: More Foreign Nurses Needed?
For the record there are no foriegn graduate nurse working in the whole hospital where I work! So Do not assume that foriegners are coming to replace your job. They only fill in the empty sluts. And what would happened if those empty slots are not filled? Should you give hospital administrator authority to establish mandatory overtime and furthere increase nurse pt work load? New grads need to be more resourceful and take an initiative make an early start to their nursing career while they're still in school. one great example is to work prn as a tech and show to your employer that you;re worth keeping. 100% of the time you will have a job waiting for you when your done! I know being a tech can be depressing because you're treated differently in a way that pt and family do not look highly of you because "you're just a TECH!'. At least this was how I felt it. It bothered me at first but it just dissipated. But use that role to learn to understand theory from fact which is vital to your nursing practice.
