Hospital or Hotel?

Before I was a RN I was a waitress for 10 years and I have to say, I was actually treated with more respect as a waitress than I am as a nurse. Pts and their families can't seem to comprehend that they are not in a "hotel" I work on a nephrology floor so many pts are on strict dietary and fluid restrictions and if I had a dollar for the times I have been reamed out for kindly attempting to explain to pts and families the need for these restrictions, I could actually retire. Now the facility I work in has sent management to Disneyworld for a "customer service classes" and they are discussing the concierge services too. I personally feel that if the management of these facilities took off their business suits and worked on the floors for a few days they would understand that concierge services and a "disneyland mentality" are not necessary to provide excellent "customer service" . Lowering nurse-pt ratios and cna-pt ratios would do pts more good than starbucks and movies on demand. I think the nursing shortage is going to get much much worse because anyone intelligent enough to be a nurse is also intelligent enough to choose a profession that is more respected. In fact I know several excellent nurses who have left the profession in disgust over the "hotel mentality" being shoved down our throats.

What the suits don't seem to comprehend, is that when one chooses to go to Disneyland or a hotel, it is to have or to rest and relax and be treated like a "king." Essentially one chooses to go to these place for a break from what one may have to put with in their everyday life. Dealing with well, healthy people whose sole purpose is to have an enjoyable time, is far different from a hospital stay.

People don't choose to be sick, and in most cases don't choose to necessarily have surgery. They are not there with the mind set of having an enjoyable time, they are there because they have to be.

Well, I'm sorry, but unless it's peds, that's just silly!

Please tell me that there really is not a hospital named "Craven..." That would just be way too ironic.

if our patients are dinging for room service, they should check it to the hotel and pay top dollar for a ding. see how many will ding when money talks. it's a shame we as nurses are overwhelmed and very much underpaid for a ding.

If i wanted to work in a hotel-like atomosphrere, i'd go work in a hotel.

Do you REALLY have to ask?

I will not be able to do this profession too much longer and have ANY self respect. We have went from a patient focus to a customer focus. Maybe folks do choose their EMERGENCY rooms based on their customer service....

Hmmm...my dad is having chest pain, is short of breath & has just vomited, gee..I think he might be really sick, lets call 911. Ambulance arrives, family refuses to go anwhere except Our Lady of Entitlement.

I was seen and out of their ER in an hour (and had my a** kissed) at Our Lady of Entitlement when I went there for a rash last week, I even got a snack and newspaper while I waited. Then they gave me my medicine to use...I didn't even need to go to the pharmacy...

Be mindful that OLE does NOT have the ability to do cardiac open heart if needed. No interventional cardiology available here..

I had to wait 3 hours when I cut my toe nail too short and it really bled, so I went to Professional Regional Medical center and they didn't even x-ray my toe, give me pain medication (I was suffering) or check my blood count (I really bled a lot) and then I didn't even get ANYTHING to eat or drink. You bet, I asked ... I'd been there so looong and felt sooo weak ... the magazines in the waiting room were 6 YEARS old. And then I they wouldn't give me a cab voucher home (yes, I took an ambulance in - bleeding can be serious!) - I shouldn't have to pay for my own taxi - this was an emergency.

This hospital has every available service, 24/7 ability to do open heart surgery if necessary...cardiologists in facility at all times....


The public best BEWARE...Their lives and the lives of those they care about may DEPEND on it!

What next a day spa for pacients in this hosptial/hotel ? or a wet bar for the pacients family where the star bucks is .

Hmmm......a few weeks ago I was almost bitten by a patients DOG! Yes, Dog......seems the supervisor gave permission for the pooch to stay in the pts room till bedtime. I was not told this, i knocked on door and entered and was met with barking, growling and teeth coming my way. Hmmmm.....maybe a dog walker should be on the menu?
