Hospital bill stuns slain student’s parents: $ 30,000 for 5 minutes

SACRAMENTO, CA - The parents of a Sacramento State student beaten to death in his dorm room received a bill from the UC Davis Medical Center -- a bill for nearly $30,000.

The hospital admitted the bill (sent to the parents) was a mistake since Scott Hawkins had insurance.....(but that) the bill is correct and reflects the services the staff provided to Hawkins after he was beaten by his roommate.

But what could possibly cost $30,000 in five minutes? Some say the answer is why we have a health care reform debate.

"Trauma surgeons, nurses, technicians and others had to treat Scott before they realized they couldn't help", according to Scott Seamons with the California Hospital Council. "They're all right there." "And those are highly trained, highly specialized and highly paid clinical experts."
this was challenged by a medical student:

UC Davis is a teaching hospital. Emergency Rooms are traditionally staffed by medical students and doctors in training to gain experience. Students receive no salary, and interns and residents get way less than a licensed practicing specialist. Most of the monies of that inflated bill will not go toward "highly trained, highly specialized and highly paid clinical experts.", but rather into the hospital coffers.

The real issue. Where the problem is. COST. Not insurance companies solely. And the insurance is gonna pay.

No, what that 30,000 dollars was for wasn't for the 5 minutes they treated Scott -- it's for the 5 people who came in after who didn't have insurance, didn't have money to pay, but still cost the hospital in time and materials. That's why an aspirin is 4 bucks.

I'd like to see the bill itemized.

Thank God they had insurance. So terrible about the loss of their son.

And we wonder why the American healthcare system is in shambles. These parents must be upset beyond reason, and I don't blame them one bit.

Not just the people on staff to treat, but the overhead and supplies required to keep the hospital open. $30k is a lot, but for a trauma? Not surprising.

Please define "coffers". My opinnion although not a popular one on this site - is I suspect that was to keep paying a CEO salary who hasn't a clue as to the necessary care and skill needed to care for this poor patient AND his parents. the @-3 nurses whether she/he be trauma or ER will only get their hourly salary- $30-$50/hour( the code propably didn't last longer than 1-1.5 hours, the trauma surgeon( $500-$1,500 ?), the anestheologist($500?) the respiratory therapist $25/hour- trama or ER techs $20/hr) medical students, interns($0) how many times does a CT scan get paid for, EKG machine, xray machine and designated trauma room. I once hear years ago it costs$1,000 to open a crash cart. the inflated cost of care supplies goes in some ones pocket and it's not the pocket of those in the trauma room running the code!! My guess it's someone who sits on their non-medically trained buns in a 3 peice suit with brooks brothers on the label who doesn't deserve the high salary they they STEAL from patients and hospital staff.

How did you decide this is not a popular opinion on the site? I don't recall seeing any support here for the ridiculously bloated salaries of healthcare executives in the years I've been a member.

Yeah, when the student said "coffers", first thing to come to mind for me was administrative bonuses.

It's appalling what a few minutes of emergency care costs. I believe it is for a variety of reasons:

1. Because they can.
2. When my husband broke his hand in April, he was also paying for the toddler whose
family had no insurance or family doctor.
3. Administrator bonuses and raises.
4. For the remodeling the hospital is doing now.
5. Because the insurance czars know we're trapped like fish in a barrel.
6. Basic unvarnished avarice and greed.
