HIV+ jailed for deliberately infecting others

An HIV positive Melbourne man who tried to infect people with the virus has been sentenced to 18 years jail in what police believe is a world-first conviction.
Michael Neal, 50, had unprotected sex without telling his partners he had HIV and arranged "conversion parties" to infect people, the Victorian County Court heard.
Sentencing Neal to a minimum of 13 years and nine months, Judge David Parsons said he showed no remorse for his terrible crimes, which continued until his arrest, despite repeated warnings from the Department of Human Services (DHS) about his behaviour.
"You sought to be your own version of the grim reaper," Judge Parsons said. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/...ng-spread-hiv/
He sounds like a thoroughly unpleasant individual, especially when you read all the way to the end of the article

wow, agreed, this man sounds awful.

are "conversion parties" illegal? obviously infecting someone without their consent is a horrible crime, but there are some folks who for some reason or another want to be infected...(I've heard of people who want to be HIV+ because their partner is, for example).

is it illegal to transfer the virus to someone who wants it? it sounds like that's what was going on in at least one instance. obviously the man deserved what he got for the rape, child porn, and transmission to unwilling victims, but why was the "party" thrown in?

His sentence was not nearly harsh enough. Life without parole in solitaire confinement with chemical castration should have been the minimum sentence.

If this guy is out to purposely infect people with HIV, do you think it's possible for the authorities to tattoo a warning somewhere on his body so that his sex partners know not only is he HIV+ but that he is out to purposely infect them? Sounds like a good idea, except I guess there is a butt load of ethic and morals involved.

I'm amazed that the PTB have so little power to stop him. How many requests had to be made to him before he was arrested?? Personally I think after he refused to stop with the second request I would have had him locked up in a psych type unit and undergo some MAJOR counciling. After that if he refused, lock his tiny hiny up and throw away the key! How many innocent people did the innocent people he infected also infect before they knew they were HIV+??

Here's a link to an article about Mr Neal from almost a year ago that I found more disturbing than the original - http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21477842-2,00.html

I am not at all shocked. I had many patients who were HIV positive say that "someone give it to me so I have to give it to someone else." They also would openly admit to having multiple sex partners.
